Today also kicks off A Very Global Christmas too! Kathy of Up To Date Interiors and I are joining up again for our annual Christmas series with 12 days of globally inspired holiday ideas! Be sure to head over to Up To Date Interiors for her Christmas tree reveal after you see my Simple Serape Inspired Christmas tree!
Each year, I like to give a theme to all my holiday decorating and trees. I’ve done a Moroccan Inspired tree, a whimsical bohemian tree, a Gold and Green eclectic tree, and last year my tropical boho Christmas tree was inspired by my Carribean background. This year’s tree was inspired by my recent trip to San Diego that was rich in Mexican and Spanish influences. So, here’s how you can take a traditional looking tree and transform it into a simple serape inspired Christmas tree!
Serape Christmas Tree
I started the tree with two boxes of shatterproof ornaments from Target and arranging them by color and finish. It’s pretty easy to make the serape stripes after you organize the ornaments in piles.
Create color stripes using the ornaments. If you don’t have enough, mix two finishes of the same color. Continue adding layers of color to mimic a serape blanket.
Then, add in the ribbon! This is where I messed up my first attempt. I placed the ribbon going vertically and that was horrible. It took away from the look of the color stripes, which meant it didn’t look like a serape blanket.
Instead, I placed the ribbon horizontally and that was so much better. The ribbon mimicked the white stripes of the blanket I used as a tree skirt. So much better right?!
You too can create a serape inspired tree, in many other colors, with simple ornaments and ribbon! Check out more colorful Christmas inspiration when I share the first part of my Christmas tour tomorrow.
