Legend of la Flor de Noche Buena

Have you heard the history of poinsettias in Mexico? Legend has it that there was a little girl named Pepita and her brother who were walking to Christmas Eve services, or La Noche Buena, at a big church in Mexico. On the way there, Pepita became embarrassed that she didn’t have a gift for the Christmas altar while everyone else had elaborate gifts to present. An angel saw Pepita crying and suggested she pick some weeds from the roadside since any gift from the heart would be appreciated. Pepita took the weeds and presented them at the altar. Those weeds began to change into the most beautiful red flowers…… the poinsettia. That is why they are called flor de Noche Buena or the Christmas Eve flowers.
