DIY Painted Shibori Frames
Create these DIY painted shibori frames and add global style to your space in minutes!
Shibori fabrics are pure perfection in any global style space. I adore the blue hues of shibori fabrics and it’s ability to blend well with any other fabric pattern. Though I prefer authentic shibori fabric, recreating the look is not only cost effective but fun too! You’ve probably seen countless tutorials on shibori dyed fabrics, but did you know you could recreate the pattern with paint? My DIY painted shibori frames are easy to make and the same technique can be used to paint shibori patterns on other surfaces.
What You Need:
- White frame
- Acrylic Paint (dark blue, light blue, purple, and black)
- Small flat brush
- Water
- Paper towel
Shibori fabrics are dipped into indigo dye and create a geometric tie dye effect. To recreate the dyed look, start by applying a very small amount of blue paint on a moisten paper towel to make a “wash” for the frame. Pass the paper towel lightly across the entire frame. Create the fabric seams by applying thin blue lines across your frame. Use the darkest hue of blue for the seam lines.
Simulate the over dyed areas by creating patterns with a mix of dark blue and purple paint to create an rich indigo hue. A shockwave effect can simulate the shibori pattern. To make the shockwave effect, start with a line and move your paint brush quickly forming very tight W’s. Increase the lengths of your lines towards the middle of your shockwave and then reduce in size as you begin to end the design. Include shorter and longer shockwaves to create a more realistic dyed effect on the frame.
The next step simulates the pinched areas of the fabric. Shibori fabrics are tied together with bands that pinch the fabric. This is what creates the shibori pattern. To recreate this effect with paint, brush small amounts of paint across the seam lines and add the occasional arrow head to simulate where the fabric would be pinched for dyeing.
Once the paint is dry, use touches of black acrylic and light blue paint to add contrast and highlights to your painted shibori pattern. Contrast a variety of areas such as below and above seam lines or around the “dye” saturated areas. Insert a fun photo or a great art print and you’re all set!
