Bilingual Color Hunt and Jump: Spanish Sabado #7

Welcome to another Spanish Sabado where I share helpful tips and activities you can do to help your bilingual Spanish child. We had a great week over at Casa Watkins.  Nugget (3 years old) is getting so well versed with his Spanish colors and Chi-Chi (2 years old) is finally able to say the name of colors in English.

We have been having a struggle getting Chi-Chi to speak and grow her vocabulary skills.  She still primarily babbles, but we are debating whether to have her assessed by a Speech pathologist.  Has anyone had any experiences with Speech therapy and bilingual children?  I would be interested to hear your experiences, whether good or bad.

Spanish Tot-school this week consisted of color review and animal names.  I will be sharing our animal activities in a future post.  Today, I’d like to share two activities that can easily be done with 1 set of color circles.  I found a set of colored circle smiley faces, which I believe go on a bulletin board, at Staples.  It has several sets of the basic 7 rainbow colors.  So I used 1 complete set to write the name of the color in Spanish and English.

Does this set look familiar?  It used to be taped to my pantry door.  When you are not using the color circle set, you can display them anywhere in your home to remind your child of the color names.  Remember that repetition and visual reminders are instrumental in helping your child learn.  This was the one of the reasons that Nugget was reading at 2 years old.

Setting up the Color Jump game is very easy.  Simply tape the circles to the floor.  If you have more than two children playing, you will need another set of colors as only 2 little feet can fit on the circle.  To play, call out a color and allow your child to step/jump on the appropriate color circle.  You can complete this activity calling out the color names in Spanish and English.

Both of the kiddos loved this game!  Chi-Chi preferred to pick up the colors instead of stepping on them, however.

The Color Hunt game can be played immediately following the Color Jump portion.  Instead of jumping on the colored circles, your child simply picks up the color from the floor and places them on a table.  Then, they must go on a hunt to locate an item that is the same color.

Nugget LOVED this game even more.  He loves going on scavenger hunts.  For your younger child, you may need to search for the color item with them.

Aren’t these games so fun!

Make learning the names of colors even more fun by incorporating this other color themed game from Casa Watkins.
