How I Snagged My White Whale: Using Brass Animal Figurines

It all started when I saw this coffee table styling picture by Pam of Simple Details. She has a great blog and you should check it out, by the way. She did a post back in February with different coffee table stylings which she named after coffee drinks. This particular styling she named cinnamon dulce latte.

I loved the brass foo dog she found thrift shopping and my desire to snag my very own brass animal figurine started. How cute would that be on my coffee table or mantel, I thought. I searched high and low and found a few on some popular home decor websites. However, none were priced around the price point I wanted. Call me frugal, but I do try to decorate my home on a reasonable budget.

During my weekly thrift store shopping this week, I went down the metal items aisle and saw the little brass beauty. Could it be? Had I finally scored a brass animal figurine? Had my 9 month search finally come to an end? Did I really snag my white whale? (you know the Moby Dick reference)

I picked it up as I had seen another shopper eyeing it. For a moment, I thought it was going to be one of those western show downs that I had seen in movies (cue in that whistle western show down song).

…It wasn’t.

I picked up the brass bird and did an internal jump for joy. Finally, I had a brass animal of my very own! I really wanted a turtle or elephant, but the bird would do. Don’t ask me what type of bird it is, but I think it’s a cardinal. Correct me if I am wrong.

My mantel was undergoing some changes for late fall, so I thought it was the perfect place for my new thrifty treasure. What do you think?

I think the brass bird adds a nice touch to my mantel. It bridges all the brass items on the mantel together. The green berry wreath was a nice Target clearance aisle find. I think it was for their spring line, but it looks great for fall and can transition into winter with a few additions.

Right now, my new home decor addition has found a place on my mantel. But, there are so many other ways to use a brass figurine.

When it comes to decorating with brass animal figurines, the possibilities are endless. If you don’t have a brass animal figurine, or don’t want to hunt one down for as long as I did, you can always spray paint a plastic toy animal with brass spray paint. Hello, brass animal!
