The One Item That Can Instantly Make Your Room Look Brighter! New Year, New Room Refresh Challenge Week 2

It’s Tuesday and for the month of January, my blogging friends and I are sharing our adventures refreshing a room for the New Year. Last week, I shared my plans for our family room and our needs for the room. You can view all of our first week’s posts here. Almost immediately after posting, practically everything about my design changed. I changed the rug I had decided upon, most of the items I wanted to use were on back-order, and the room accessories I wanted were all sold out! I kept chugging along and have made an even better room. One of the biggest changes to the family room has also made the room look bigger and brighter.

Here is another view of our family room at the start of the refresh. A glaring decorating issue that causes this room to look out of scale and bottom heavy is the red rug. Not only is the rug not the appropriate size for the room, but the color pulls your eye downward in a negative way.

I knew that I needed to get an appropriately sized rug to start. The color of the rug was also going to be a very important detail. I opted to use a large 7’10” x 10×10″ blue patterned rug from RugsUSA. Not only was this size required to make the room look to scale, but the color and pattern made a dramatic change making the room look much larger and brighter.

When sizing your rug for a room, you’ll want to have your accent rug large enough to touch the outlining furniture. In my case, the Bosphorus Floral Symphony rug was used to pull the room furniture together.

The Bosphorus blue and white patterned rug instantly made the room look much brighter. The solid colored red rug failed to give the room an open, airy feel. Instead, I selected a patterned rug that contained a significant amount of white/ivory detailing that would break the dark blue color. The rug coordinates very well with the greige colored walls and white curtains all of which make the room look brighter. Though, the star of the show is the fabulous, soft rug.
