A few years ago, my mother announced that she was over Mother’s day gifts and wanted Mother’s day experiences instead. There is something slightly unsettling not acknowledging my mother with some sort of a gift. So, my sisters and I got creative and began planning events that included a gift. Over the years we have have gifted her painting sessions where she painted her own gift, hosted at home spa days and gifted her spa baskets, and one year we held a victorian tea party and gifted her the tea party apparel. This year, I’ve planned a Mother’s day Make and Take party full of diy projects made with selections from the Better Homes and Gardens line of housewares sold exclusively at Walmart.
Make and Take Table Display
A Mother’s day Make and Take party is a wonderful way to bond and get creative by making your own customized DIY Mother’s day gift. Who doesn’t love that! I formulated a display with all the supplies needed for my Make and Take party. Many of these pieces can serve multiple purposes. Use them as components for your table display or serveware for a Mother’s day brunch.
Bath baskets were used to hold crafting supplies and one was flipped over and used as a shelf for a plant and an aromatic candle. Placemats are great to protect your table and as a place marker for your crafting spot. We typically only have 3 of us doing the projects, but placing a placemat on your crafting area can still be fun. Definitely helps call dibs on the seat with the best lighting. Ha! I tied ribbon around rolled placemats and placed them in the basket along with scissors and a glue gun.
Glass Candle votive holders make great containers for markers or pens. Use the glass votive set for paint markers, brushes, or other art supplies. Don’t forget the drinks! Use wine glasses to serve refreshing cucumber water or try my kiwi mojito recipe!
DIY Mother’s Day Gift Ideas
DIY flower basket from bath basket
Global and boho style are quite popular now. Baskets that are dip dyed or stained are just as popular. Create the look of those global baskets using dye paint! Paint your initial color on 1/3 of the basket. Be sure to start with the bottom to allow for faster drying. Paint your second color directly above the first, overlapping the two colors just slightly. Protect the basket from water damage by lining the inside with plastic then insert your colorful spring flowers into each of the basket slots! Just look at these vibrant flowers! This flower basket makes a great mantel piece, but would also look fantastic on a table.
DIY confetti catch-all bowl from side bowl
To create a confetti catch all bowl, you’ll need to start with a white side dish and your selected paint colors. Choose 3-5 coordinating paint colors and prime by pressing each pen tip into a paper towel. Add scattered and random paint nicks on the side dish with all the paint colors. Cure the bowl by placing in a cold oven and set temperature at 425. Bake for 1 hour and let cool before using it. This bowl can be used as a fruit bowl, a catch all bowl near an entryway, or as organization on your vanity.
Pom Pom makeup brush holder from toothbrush holder
Pom poms are always a favorite here at Casa Watkins Living. Repurpose a toothbrush holder into a pom-tastic makeup brush holder! Use your glue gun to add pom poms around a glass toothbrush holder. Cover the lower third of the holder or the entire thing! Have fun with this! Don’t wear makeup? You can use the holder as a desk organizer, a paint brush holder, or up the pizazz of your bathroom and keep it as a toothbrush holder.
Mail sorter from vanity tray
Have you seen these glam vanity trays from Better Homes and Garden? The styling reminded me of one of my favorite designers and I just had to have it. Instead of using the tray on my bathroom vanity, I repurposed it into a mail sorter. Use your paint pens to draw a funky image of an envelope. Create a fun, whimsical mail sorter tray using bright paint pens and fun font.
This Mother’s day, spend your day creating fun DIY projects made just for you! A Mother’s day Make and Take party is a great way to have fun with the family and make something you’ll love. Looking for a personalized gift for your mom? Why not make all four of these gifts and bundle them in a basket?! Each piece can be given as individual gifts as well. Have a wonderful Mother’s day and happy creating!
