Indian Inlay Stenciled Chair Makeover

It’s almost like an inner explosion of happiness. Then you look at the price tag and that happy feeling is snatched away so quickly it hurts. Well, that’s what I have been feeling about bone inlay furniture. I love the look of it and have been eyeing some for quite a while. Unfortunately, I do not have the money to spare for bone inlay furniture. That’s why I was so excited to get my hands on the Indian Inlay stencil kit by Cutting Edge Stencils. You can get the look of Moroccan and Indian bone inlay furniture without the hole in your wallet.
Stencils are a great way to update any furniture, fabric, or wall. The stencils at Cutting Edge stencils are so well priced too. You can easily update any item for about the cost of an accent pillow. You should definitely check out their blog to see what amazing projects they have featured. I thought I’d challenge myself and makeover this $8.00 thrift store chair using the Indian Inlay stencil kit.
I was surprised to find that it was very easy to use even with all the intricate details. The kit comes with 5 stencils that you can coordinate multiple ways. This truly is the hardest part of the whole process. I took a while deciding which pattern sequence I wanted.
Once you choose your pattern sequence, you are ready to start painting. I used a mix of Folkart paints that included canvas colored acyclic paint and a white chalk paint. I also mixed in a pearl paint by Martha Stewart, which was not really showing up great. I wanted that pearly color you see on the real bone inlay. I’ll have to experiment with this in the future. I already know what my next stenciled project is going to be.
Cutting Edge has a separate starter kit that is especially helpful. You receive a brush, roller, and a clip on level. I used the level to make sure the first pattern was straight and then used that stenciled pattern as a basis for the remaining stencils.
I used the brush for my initial attempt then quickly changed to the roller. It is so much easier to use the roller and you get faster results. The brush is great to add additional colors or details. The paint dried so quickly that I was able to apply the second stencil by the time I had finished the second side of the chair.
I was so gitty as soon as I pulled back the first stencil. YES! It worked! Tip, wipe off as much of the paint from the brush or roller before rolling on the stencil. I had to re-do several areas because there was too much paint, which bleed under the stencil. Be gentle as you remove your painter’s tape. Pulling it off quickly can cause some of the paint to come off your previous pattern. If you don’t have room to tape above the stencil, you can place your tape below it.
The chair took about 2 hours to complete. Though, I had to stop several times to explain what I was doing to my 3 year old and then get dinner ready. Stenciling is one of those projects you want to space out. I am impatient when it comes to projects; so, I was set to start and finish on the same day. Not recommended! Finish your chair by sealing with clear wax.
It took an additional 30 minutes recovering the dated chair cushion material. I love the new green color and it looks amazing with the inlay stenciling. What a difference!
The legs proved quite difficult. I can see why there aren’t many stenciled chair projects. I tried several times to get the pattern on the legs and it was not working for me at all. So, I opted for some painted details instead.
The entire desk area looks so much better now. It’s a great kick off to my family room makeover. Stay tuned for more projects to update your family room and follow along as I makeover mine.
