How to Make A Giant Bow Tree Topper

I finally finished the living room Christmas tree with a giant bow tree topper! I’ve been staring at our Christmas tree for a few weeks now with a feeling that something was missing. After seeing Ashley’s At Home with Ashley Christmas tree bow topper, I knew that my tree needed a version of this STAT! Though Ashely made her bow by sewing it together, I needed a no-sew version for this non-sewing chica.

Enter my trusty glue gun coming to the rescue!

This year’s Christmas theme was a mix of gingerbread glam and pinkmas. The dining room had all the gingerbread glam with a bohemian glam Christmas tree while the living room showcased pinkmas.

The pink and orange bauble ornaments along with sparkly bead Christmas picks adorn the living room Christmas tree. Light blue, iridescent, and frosted baubles accentuate all the pink and orange colors. It was looking just like I wanted it to, but it needed a little something more to give it more pizazz at the top of the tree. The giant hot pink bow was the final chef’s kiss to this Christmas tree. Here is how you can make your own giant bow Christmas tree topper and customize the look for your Christmas theme.

Materials to make a Giant Bow for a Christmas Tree

For this giant bow tree topper, I used 5 ft of satin hot pink fabric I ordered from Amazon. I didn’t find the color I wanted at Joanns and I was super surprised to only pay $20 total for the fabric on Amazon! There were several available colors so I encourage you to check out my Amazon store front to see all the options I tracked down for you. The bow took just a few minutes to make and only required the materials listed below.

  • Satin fabric from Amazon (search colors and lengths of satin fabric from Amazon)
  • Glue gun with at least 5 sticks of transparent glue
  • Cable tie to secure bow to tree. Alternatively, you could use floral wire.
  • Shopping bags and a couple of zip up plastic gallon bags.

How to Make a Giant Bow with Fabric

This project is not only affordable but able to be customized to meet your own Christmas theme. Many tree toppers cost more than $20, so this project is a steal! Here are the steps to make a giant bow with fabric and a glue gun.

  1. Fold fabric in half, pretty side out, along the longest side
  2. Bring the two ends of the fabrics together.
  3. Use glue gun to apply a short line of glue.
  4. Fold seam over onto the glue.
  5. Apply a line of glue on top of the finished seam and bring the seam of the other side of the fabric to meet the glue.
  6. This will create a finished looking hem. Repeat until the entire fabric halves have been glued.
  7. Tie the fabric into a bow using two loops (bunny ear method) of the fabric. Please see video tutorial for a visual.
  8. Fluff the bows by opening a small part of the hem and inserting the shopping bags into the pocket. Optional: add a ziplock bag into the bow and inflate bag (while in the bow) using a hair dryer on cool setting. Repeat the process to the other side of the bow then close the created openings with glue. Glue the hem of the ribbon tails to finish the look.
  9. Insert a cable tie gently into the backside of the middle knot of the bow and attach it to your tree top.
