If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been on an instant room transformation kick these first weeks of the New Year. There is just something so refreshing about starting a new year with a fab new space. So, I’ve been sharing some ideas to transform your home pretty quickly so you get instant gratification and gitty about your home.
I shared how to paint a geometric wall mural last week and today I’m sharing how to make a 3D accent wall with easy to install panels! Most projects I tackle are done on my own, but I was lucky to have some help on a weekend to get this done. We started Saturday night and finished Sunday morning, so you can easily take care of this project in one day.
Here is what the wall looked like before the panels…..It was pretty bland and the only architectural detail was the fireplace mantel.
After installing the 3D panels, we were able to create a hip, modern wall with loads of pizzazz for our family room. We used about 6 boxes of 3D panels and 7 tubes of heavy duty adhesive to create this wall. Here is how we did it!
Materials for 3D Accent Wall
- Panels ( I used these geometric panels, but you can find more 3D panels on The Home Depot’s website.
- Construction Adhesive
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
How to Install 3D Panels
You’ll first need to determine the center of the wall and align it with the center of one of the panels. We wanted to create a seamless look as much as possible, and having the partitions between the panels in the center of the room was going to make the panels pieces SUPER obvious.
Our walls are 9 feet high, so we needed about 5.5 panels going down and 8 panels going across. Be sure you have enough panels before taking on your job. These geometric panels were 19.7″ x 19.7″ so I made sure to measure how many panels I would need before I started.
Once you have the correct number of panels needed, begin placing your panels from the top down. If you can fit the panels without any need for cutting….. I’d be super jealous…. but, we needed to cut panels to fit the right and left side of the wall plus the bottom. UGH! Luckily, it was easy to cut the panels with scissors.
Use heavy duty adhesive to secure each panel to the wall. Follow the instructions for the adhesive and wipe away any excess oozing along the panels. Continue adding the panels until you fill the wall.
We ended up removing the fireplace surround and lowering the mantel, which allowed us to fit more panels and made the wall look so much better! Use caulk to hide the panel seams and fill in any gaps around the pieces you had to cut.
See, all done! I’m just loving how the wall turned out. I’m planning to do a couple of paint jobs to see how to accentuate the wall, but the two tone we currently have is working so well in the meantime.
