Part of my joy in decorating with global accents is discovering the history of the accent piece and finding new ways of using the global decor. I came across hammam bowls while planning accents for my dining room makeover and was in awe of their craftsmanship. In reading a few articles about its origin, I found that hammam bowls are traditional bowls used in Moroccan and Turkish bath houses. How cool is that?!
There is a beautiful Moroccan and Turkish tradition of using the hammam bath houses for building community and chatting with your friends. Very similar to a community hang out, but with a spa element. Specially made soaps are used to exfoliate and hammam attendants help the guests to scrub away impurities. Makes you want to really visit one and experience it all for yourself…..maybe not the part where you are completely naked.
Hammam bowls can be found in these bath houses and used to pour bathing water. However, they are now going global and used for much more! Check out these 5 ways you can use these handcrafted beauties in your home.
Hammam bowls for floral arrangements
One of the ways I have used hammam bowls the most is as vases for floral arrangements. Whether you have a large arrangement or a petite bloom, hammam bowls bring a beautiful sophistication to your floral piece.
Hammam bowls as storage containers
I used several hammam bowls in my dining room makeover and one of the best uses was as a container for utensils. These bowls make great catch all bowls whether for tables or bathrooms. Hammam bowls come in various sizes, which allow you some flexibility in storing goodies.
Hammam bowls as candle holder
The smaller hammam bowls make great candle holders. Use a thick candle or a few floating candles in hammam bowls to set the mood of your space.
Hammam bowls in the bath
We of course can’t forget how great these bowls look in the bathroom. Instead of placing next to the sink, use the bowls for bathroom goodies like soaps, towels, or brushes.
Hammam bowls for decor vignettes
Last week, I shared my tropical global entryway as part of my summer home tour. One of the accents on my entryway table is a small hammam bowl all decked out for the summer. The hammam bowls are not restricted to Moroccan decor. Mix and match global elements and add your own sense of seasonal decor to create a globally inspired vignette.
When it comes to decorating with global style, find your own voice and go with what you like! Use traditional global accent pieces in your own way. Can you see yourself using hammam bowls in your decor? Here are a few great hammam bowls to start your decorating.
These are lovely! Especially great for jewelry and bathroom accessories, where I feel like I always have random odds and ends to store and want something to stack on my trays.
Those are beautiful! Love the history behind them!
They’re so pretty! Never heard of ’em!
I’ve never heard of them but totally agree that they are gorgeous! I love them used as the floral vase and in the bathroom with soaps, towels, and more.
These bowls are gorgeous. I have a couple of pounded metal bowls that are similar in structure but lack the detail. I love the detail on these bowl and I think they would make a great accessory in my home. LOL!
They are such pretty little pieces and a great way to add a bit of detail to a space. I love how you’ve mixed them into your home.
