Creating a basement home gym in a small space

IT’S THE NEW YEAR NEW ROOM REFRESH CHALLENGE REVEAL DAY!

I adore this day each January! So many room refresh ideas coming your way today as we reveal our New Year New Room Refresh challenge spaces. Be sure to check out all of the participants websites today for a bunch of home decorating ideas to kick off 2023. This year, I chose to tackle an area in my basement and created a basement home gym in a small space. The small room had no real purpose and so it became what many purposeless rooms become…. a dump zone.

After several weeks of cleaning, finishing installed drywall, painting, installing wallpaper, and even creating an accent wood slat wall….. the day has finally come to REVEAL the new home gym! I am beyond happy with the results and that I have a working home gym to use for my health journey this year.

Let us go down memory lane just a second and take a look at the design plan. The general aim was to create a space that would not only motivate me to work out but also keep a relaxing, peaceful environment for the times I needed to focus on yoga.

I shared my progress over the course of the last 4 weeks which you can check out below.

My new home gym checks all the boxes I needed! It has a relaxing atmosphere for the times I want to do yoga, yet enough room for dancing/cardio plus the exercise equipment. The boho wood grain wallpaper from Spoonflower is a showstopper in this room. It took forever to put up but I’m so thankful I did it. It creates the perfect mood for the home gym. The new lighting also has EcoSmart lightbulbs that features a switch to alternate between different hues of white. I love this feature for the times I want a calming soft white for yoga versus a brighter white for cardio workouts.

The white shelves were repurposed from the old office/craft room and provides great storage for the smaller exercise equipment and beverages. Unfortunately, the wad of internet cables is still here but I bought some woven baskets from IKEA that I hope to use to hide all these ghastly cords. If I can only get the hubs to sort out all the cables first. :\

Right under my “You Got This” neon sign is the dedicated exercise machine area. The exercise bicycle has center stage for the moment as I didn’t have the arm strength to bring down the treadmill from the bedroom myself. We have a smaller, foldable treadmill that slides under the bed. It’s a good and compact treadmill, but I definitely want it moved to the gym now.

The room is quite small but hanging three oversized mirrors from Ikea and the vertical wood slat wall makes this gym feel much more spacious.

The original plan was to take the wood slats from floor to ceiling, but a mishap with my measurements left me with 38 lattice pieces of 6 ft lattice instead of the 7 ft I needed. It took me 2 hours to cut all those lattice pieces in The Home Depot and I refused to not use them in the gym.

A quick pivot and a helping hand from my Dad got me this beautiful feature wall. I adore how this accent wall turned out! It definitely gives the gym a natural, organic vibe that is oh so relaxing!
