DIY Painted Otomi Coasters

Create these DIY painted Otomi coasters for your next summer entertaining event!

Friends I have had several days of rain here in Maryland….and it looks like it will continue until next week!  The gloom always makes everything seem so colorless, so I’m excited to share these colorful diy painted otomi coasters today for the second week of Shauna’s of Satori Design for Living Outdoor Extravaganza!  Last week I shared a DIY Anthropologie inspired planter to kick off the summer decorating.  This week is another fun project!  I had so much fun creating these coasters from wood slices, but you can paint them on any coasters you may have laying around the house.  Be sure to visit all the other entertaining ideas shared by this awesome group of bloggers at the end of this post.

I love the folk patterns seen in Mexican, especially otomi.  They remind me of hot summer days and have a great global presence in any home.  My husband and I vacationed in Mexico last year and in my excitement I completely forgot to shop!  YES I KNOW!!! So, I’ve been recreating some of the awesome artistry I saw while I was there….with my own twist of course.  You should see how I created a trendy wall hanging made to look like serape. These diy painted otomi coasters were inspired by dinner plates from one of the restaurants we dined at.  Check out how to make these puppies and be sure to whip up a few for your summer entertaining!  Don’t forget the tasty drinks.  If you’re looking for a yummy drink recipe, check out my kiwi mojito recipe or recipe for a blackberry mint julep.

Start your coasters by lightly drawing your pattern onto the cut wood slices with a pencil.  I found my wood slices at Joann Fabrics for a few dollars, but they pop up in any craft store.  A very important tip, if you are planning to use a yellow paint pen be sure to make your pencil marks even lighter.  Some of my pencil marks can be seen with the yellow paint.  Unfortunately it was too late to erase them after my paint, so be sure to remember that tip for your coasters.

Use your paint pen to color in your design.  Add more details if you feel your coaster needs it.  I added a few dots here and there to fill in the empty spots.  After the paint has dried, apply a coat of modpodge to seal the coasters.

Enjoy these coasters this summer or bundle them up as a hostess gift!  I loved how they looked for the afternoon snack picnic I decorated for the kids.  They just love having a little picnic on a rainy day….or sunny day really.  Any reason to lounge on a blanket and play some games.

I made a simple strawberry basil infused water for snack time too.  I’ve been lucky that the kiddos don’t mind drinking water at all, but it’s nice to offer them a variation once in a while.  Chi-Chi in particular loves anything with strawberries in it.

  1. Love the bright colours and fun patterns! I still have some log slices leftover from an ornament project I did a few years ago. May have to pull them out and try this 😉
