DIY Serape Inspired Yarn Hanging

Create your own DIY serape inspired yarn hanging for great global bohemian style and more Mexican inspired decor for The Global Styler.

The ladies of The Global Styler are back for another month of globally inspired projects and decor ideas!  This month, we are sharing Mexican inspired decor ideas.  Be sure to visit each of my cohosts’ ideas at the end of my diy serape inspired yarn hanging tutorial.  You’re sure to love the Mexican inspired decor.

You don’t need to be from Mexico to appreciate the beauty of the cultural patterns and textiles.  I’ve definitely seen Mexican serape used in bohemian abodes as well as in other home styles.  The colorful textile adds great warmness to a space, not to mention instant global style.  So, I’m excited to share this play on a trendy wall hanging and the traditional Mexican serape.  It merges the global style vibes we all love with boho style.

This easy to create diy serape wall hanging can be customized to your own room colors and for seasonal looks.  We totally skipped over spring here in Maryland.  After the long winter and harsh snowy weather, I was looking forward to breezy spring vibes.  Instead, we shot straight into 90s heat so I’m feeling the summery colors of my new diy serape yarn hanging.  Check out the tutorial and create your own!

DIY Serape Yarn Hanging

The serape textiles from Mexico can be quite colorful, so have fun selecting bold or vibrant yarn colors for this project.  I made a couple edits in my original plan, but I did want to highlight the pops colors in my living room.  I lucked out and bought all the yarn on sale at AC Moore.  Yarn can be a little expensive, so I highly suggest checking out the online store coupons and those on RetailMeNot.

After selecting your yarn, create a color plan.  Simply lay out your yarn to see if you like how the colors look next to each other.  I was planning to incorporate a yellow, but the yarn was too thin in comparison to the others so I left it out.  Which brings me to a tip.  Get yarn that is equal in thickness or just slightly different.  Yarn that is too different will make your hanging look disproportionate.  Start by tying both ends of your hanging yarn to a wooden rod.

Now, you can begin to loop the colorful yarn around the wooden rod to create the serape look.  You’ll want to cut your yarn pieces 2 times the length desired.  Fold the yarn in half and loop into itself to secure around the rod.  Continue adding your yarn colors until you’ve finished the pattern.

To create the serape blankets criss-crossed sections, braid a black and white yarn with a light colored yarn (I used gray) and tie the ends to secure the braid.  Loop around the rod as you have done with the other colors.  Not only does this create the criss-cross pattern, but you add more texture to your  serape wall hanging.  This was probably the most frustrating element of the project.  Since I was braiding such a long piece of yarn, the pieces kept getting tangled together.  I needed one of those 90’s hair braiding tools for real!!   You can avoid my frustration by purchasing yarn that happens to have that gray and white (or black and white) color already.

Finish placing the remaining yarn colors and hang in a favorite spot!  The house is still pretty chaotic, but I do plan on hanging this in the dining room once the renovations are all done.
