It’s Create and Share day! Every month my cohost, Cat of Pocketful of Posies and I invite fellow DIY bloggers to a DIY challenge featuring a particular item. This month, we decided to use rope! Check out all 14 amazing rope projects being shared today at the end of my post. You will definitely find a project you love. I decided to create a DIY African inspired Jute Planter! This DIY jute planter is so easy to create and can make a great gift for only a few dollars.
DIY African Inspired Jute Planter
If you have any planter sitting around collecting dust, then this project is for you. It’s a great simple planter project that can make all sorts of impact with the right materials. A tribal vibe was created by using coarse jute rope, which I got for $1.00 a spool from the Target dollar section, and paired it with a bold ribbon that is very reminiscent of African wax print. African wax print is a batik printed fabric found mostly in West Africa. They often are very bold in color and have all sorts of beautiful patterns that tell stories of the people wearing them. Tell your own story by transforming a terra cotta planter into your own African inspired jute planter.
What You Need
- Terra cotta planter
- Jute Rope
- Bold, patterned ribbon
It’s best to work with a terra cotta planter that has been slightly white washed for this project. The white wash softens the look of the terra cotta color and will create a more natural appearance to the planter. Simply mix two parts of paint to one part water and apply 1-2 coats for your desired intensity. Use your glue gun or permanent adhesive to wrap the jute rope around the base of the planter.
Wrap your ribbon around the planter right above your jute rope. You’ll want to leave the top segment of the planter free. Insert your favorite plant or use the planter as an organizer on your desk! This cute planter is sure to be a conversation starter in your home.
