My basement office is so much brighter with a colorful painted geometric wall mural. Not only does it break up the neutral wall color, but it also creates an accent by highlighting a corner in my office. An electrical panel may not be what you’d think to highlight in a room, but the elevated panels provided the opportunity for a dimensional painted wall mural in a very plain room.

Plus, I did this entire painted design project in a few hours one night! Talk about a quick room makeover idea.

How to paint a geometric wall mural

  • The first step in my design process is figuring out my paint colors. Others may want to sketch the design, but I feel that I get a better sense of the design when I know how many colors I’d want in the mural. Either way, you need to decide your colors and a design. If you’re having trouble, not to worry. The next step gives you a better idea!
  • Use painter’s tape to create the design on your wall. I used Frog tape and loved being able to move and reposition the tape without pulling off the white paint from my newly painted wall. Plus, I found that it had practically zero bleeding of the paint. There was one part, but that totally was my fault for not making sure the tape was pressed down before painting. UGH!

  • When planning the design with tape, make sure to keep in mind that the color will be inside the shapes you create. This sounds like a DUH thing, but there was an instance when I forgot that and painted the area thinking I was creating stripes but in fact made a rectangle with a stripe down the middle in the base white wall color (see what I thought were stripes on the far right panel door….). For this reason, you may need to paint a second layer of paint if you are layering shapes once the first painted shape is dry.

  • Apply 2-3 coats of paint to your mural and then remove the tape for the areas that will have an overlapping shape. This will allow the paint to dry evenly before you tape off again. In the photo below, I had already removed my first taping job and then reapplied the tape to create the layered shapes.

Once you have your geometric mural looking the way you’d like, add your final finishing touches by scanning the edges of each shape. I had to do a couple more coats of the orange, but otherwise it was a super quick and easy project.

Don’t be afraid to go over switches too! It really adds to the overall mural look when you incorporate those wall plates and architectural features. Just don’t paint on the actual electric outlet itself!
