New Year New Room Refresh Challenge: The Living Room
Aaaand we’re off. I’m so excited to be hosting The New Year, New Room Refresh Challenge again this year. It was such a great way to kickoff the New Year last year that I wanted to do it all over again this year. The premise is that you refresh a room and create a new look to symbolize a fresh start to the year. I’ve invited more of my friends to join in and this year you can too! At the end of the 4 weeks we will be opening up our blogs for you to show off your own refreshed room via a linkup. Stay tuned for those details as the weeks progress. In the meantime, this week is all about your inspiration and room design.
Here is the room to start. It’s okay, but I really wanted to change this room practically 5 minutes after I had finished it last year. I’d like to lighten the room, bring a more sophisticated touch with contemporary pieces while still maintaining a fusion of global style.
I have wrecked my mind coming up with a space to refresh this year. I had so many options given that my hubs revealed to me he wanted a more contemporary look in our home. Yes, after a year of decorating with a more casual appeal, I have to restart the process to create a global contemporary eclectic home. I’m starting with the front of the house and turned to a few rooms for inspiration.
After weeks of changing the design, I finally settled on this room board. It’s a bit more contemporary, but I feel still infuses a global casualty that I relate to. The sofa is from Urban Home. It’s a more sleek design compared to the leather sofa I currently have in the living room. The rug, courtesy of RugsUSA, is a blend of my favorite colors to decorate with. The blue with hints of orange brings a new feel to the room. Probably the most noticeable change is that the green curtains are gone. I loved this green color, but lighter curtains will open up the room and make this small living room seem much larger.
I’m keeping the rattan side tables and adding a new cool lamp from LampsPlus. I love when lamps have a lot of character. Finally, I’ll be giving a few pieces a paint job with Velvet Finishes paint. I’m going back and forth whether to paint the china cabinet completely or give it a weathered look.
Since the living room is off of the entryway, I decided to tackle it too. This amazing Candice Olsen wallpaper from Wallpaper Boulevard will immediately luxe up the entryway. It’s all about finding the right balance with the console table and accessories after that point. I’m still working on this space, but I like the direction its heading. What do you think?
I welcome you to take on the challenge too and get ready to share it at the end of the month. Check out what my friends are doing today! I really can’t wait to check out their spaces.

Thanks so much Lisa!!! Me too. It’s going to be a great way to release 2016 and welcome 2017.
How long are those green curtains? Are you planning on getting rid of them? I may be able to use them.
I believe they are 95″ long. I’m not sure if I’ll be using them in another space yet, but I can definitely let you know. 🙂
Girl- YES! You’re such a rockstar taking on both areas. That wallpaper is gorgeous. I always love what you do so I’m pretty stoked to see this new direction!
This is definitely a new venture for me. Hoping I can keep up with the contemporary look… the room may end up looking just like my style in the end. :/

Ooh Steph, it’s going to be so gorgeous! I LOVE that wallpaper, and of course you know me, I’m drawn to the light and airy type of decorating naturally, so there’s that. Can’t wait to follow along, and thanks again for all your hard work hosting this for us!
I love this wallpaper too! I can’t wait to see it up!
Your inspiration pictures are gorgeous. You have so many great pieces to work with, I can’t wait to see how this space turns out. I know it will still have that beautiful, bright, and bold global eclectic style!
Thanks so much Kathy! Hoping you love the end result! I love seeing your globally inspired spaces too!
The new look is going to be amazing Stephanie! The lighter feel is going to make the space feel so large and those white curtains for sure will make such a drastic difference with the light coming in. Can’t wait to see the reveal! Love the global modern feel!
Thanks so much Deb! I’m hoping it has just enough global style to make it still feel like my own space.:/
Great design plans, Stephanie! Love the new elements you’re bringing in. Your inspiration is gorgeous. Excited to see the spaces unfold!
Carol thanks so much! Hope you love the result!!!
OH my gosh, I LOVE your inspirational images and the direction! Also, I’m totally feeling like I should get kicked out of the challenge… you are killing it and all I got is … let’s purge. =(
LOL! I loved your post. I have loads of purging to do myself. I don’t think I can fit anymore into my hoard room. lol.
Wow, this is a totally 360 degree makeover. I cannot wait to see the final look and how your style is going to evolve this year.
Thanks Jess! I hope the space still feels like me and has a more sophisticated feel for the hubs.
I love the new sofa and lighter colors you’re going to use! It’s going to be beautiful and looks like the perfect compromise between your vibrant style and the sophisticated look your husband wants. Can’t wait to see how it turns out and thanks so much for hosting!
Thanks Sharon. I’m hoping he likes the result. He is so picky with things like this. :/
Steph,
I love your design plan and your inspiration spaces are just stunning! I can’t wait to see how your room turns out!!! Pinning!
Thanks Cat. I’m looking forward to seeing it all come together throughout the house. This is just the first room to be tackled in this adapted global style.
I love the sofa! And the lamps– it will be such a gorgeous space, yet timeless.
Definitely! Im looking to have a space where I finally feel that I don’t need to do a major makeover and just a few seasonal changes here and there. I’ve been waiting for that feeling and this room is just the start.
