Modern Spanish Kitchen Inspiration

It’s finally time for a renovation around Casa Watkins!  See the modern Spanish kitchen inspiration behind our design.

In April I shared that we had a leaking water pipe in our kitchen that destroyed our kitchen and dining area.  The process of filing an insurance claim was so frustrating that I just wanted to pick up and move.  I shared about the troubles I had in a kitchen disaster post along with a “prettified” version of the damage.  I’m excited to finally start sharing my inspiration and plans for the kitchen.  It took a lot of compromising to establish the vibe for the kitchen, especially since the rest of the first floor will be undergoing changes shortly afterward.

One of the biggest and most exciting changes will be the removal of the intersecting wall between the kitchen and dining room.  The stove will move to the main wall thus opening up the kitchen.  Our kitchen doesn’t receive the best lighting since the sunroom was built directly in front of it (don’t ask me why…it was my hubs).  With the removal of the wall, we should get optimal light streaming in from the dining room window.  This will also give us the space to add a kitchen island.  The little kitchen island cart has got to go!

Speaking of brightening up the kitchen, the kitchen counters are in drastic need of an upgrade.  I’m thinking a light quartz countertop will be perfect to brighten the kitchen.  It will definitely be better than our 11 year old builder grade laminate counters.  Since we are enlarging the kitchen, the dining room will have to move into the existing living room space at the front of the house.  The formal living room is going bye bye!  It’s going to be a different experience when you walk into the house, but I think it’ll look great.  I’ll share more about those changes later, but in the meantime, take a look at the inspiration behind the new kitchen.

Modern Spanish Kitchen Inspiration

I’ve always been attracted to the style of homes in California and Florida.  Some truly embody the rustic elegance of the Spanish revival style while others take a modern spin and blend it with global accents.  You don’t see too many homes styled that way in my neck of the woods, but that isn’t going to stop me from placing my own twist on it.  Some of things I want to see in our kitchen are patterned tiles, a blend of wood stained and painted cabinets, a mix of metal finishes, and of course white countertops and an apron front sink.  Here are some of the kitchens inspiring our renovation.

The previous kitchen is by far one of my most favorite makeovers from the now finished Fixer Upper show.  When this reveal happened, I swelled with envy.  It’s a gorgeous representation of a modern Mediterranean kitchen.  One of the features I adore from all of these kitchens is the mix of wood stained shelves or cabinets and painted cabinets.  Not only does it warm up the kitchen, but it truly makes the space feel cozy and welcoming.  I want our family to feel at home and that they can make a mess (not that I want them too!).  Here are some more examples that are inspiring me.

Stay tuned for more kitchen updates.  I’m working on a rendition that better demonstrates the plans and will share that as soon as it’s done.  I’m so excited to share this journey with you all.  I’ll be sharing filmed progress on the Casa Watkins Living youtube channel so if you’re not subscribed yet, be sure to join in here!
