How To Style Any Table: Coffee Table Styling
Hola!
I have seen one of three strategies used to decorate a family room coffee table when children are present in the home. Either the family has minimal to no items on the coffee table, continues with the original amount of decorating regardless of children (that’s me!), or simply removes the coffee table altogether (more room for activities!). Which type of coffee table decor strategy do you have?
Depending on the characteristics of your children, whether they mouth or chew items in particular, you may be able to continue decorating your coffee table even with children in the home. Chi-Chi is now 3 years old, but was an avid mouther. I mean AVID!!
Anything she found on the floor she would put in her mouth. Any and all items on the table would instantly become a sucking toy. Thank goodness that is all behind us……Oh my gosh.
Literally as I write this, I look over and she has placed a Lego wheel in her mouth! I’m not even making this up! I wish I had a camera handy so I could show you her face right now. I take all of it back amigos, she is STILL in a semi-mouthing stage or I suppose a stage that only applies to Lego wheels. She did hand it over without a fight, though.
As I was saying…
It is possible to continue to have a styled coffee table even with children. Better yet, a coffee table with a global, eclectic style.
Global, eclectic style to me is a fusion of various cultural home accents that blend together to create a worldly home vibe. This can be accomplished by mixing various cultural patterns, textures, furniture styles, and home accessories. Sometimes, it has a world traveler appeal or a nomadic zing. At times, I have considered myself nomadic style in the sense that I am fond of incorporating items from my travels and always feel the need to see the world.
Today, I’m joining some wonderful home decor bloggers to share how you can style any table! Each of us will share tips and decor ideas to help you style different tables in your home. There is only one simple rule to follow when styling a coffee table with global, eclectic decor style.
Incorporate the items you love!
If you are loving chinoiserie that week, arrange a collection of your chinoiserie items in the center of your table and fill the extra spaces with small plants. Or, show off some of your worldly accents either purchased or gifted to you on top of a set of books. Global, eclectic to me is a mix and match style. So, you can use as many or as few cultural accents on your table
You’ll want to keep the table look aesthetically pleasing. So, using various heights for the items helps. Use candlesticks, stacked books, or even tall floral arrangements in a Spanish or Portuguese pitcher to achieve some height to your table. Not too high to block the television or get knocked over by the kids.
If you have a long rectangular table like I do, divide your table into zones. I divided my table into three zones with each zone equaling about a third of the table and gave each zone a unique look. Though, there should be a theme that unifies all the zones. My current coffee table decor, for example, uses flowers as the unifying theme.
Incorporate your global accents in each zone. There are several shops and stores where you could find great global accessories and home decor in case you haven’t done much traveling or would like to increase your global accessory stock.
I recently purchased this cute turtle magnifying glass from HomeGoods. I find thrift stores are another great place to score some global accents. I have found great authentic chinese pottery pieces, art work, and even furniture pieces at thrift stores.
This cute roadrunner was a thrift store score. I have read that roadrunners, in some Native American cultures, are sacred animals that ward off evil spirits. Not my belief, but an interesting tid bit nonetheless.
Whatever your current table theme, just have fun incorporating the various global accents! What kind of global accents do you see yourself incorporating on your coffee table? Let’s share ideas in the comments.
