Homemade clay Easter Egg Tags
We can’t do any spring decorating without some sort of Easter egg craft. That’s why I love today’s post about creative Easter egg ideas. It’s day two of the Very Global Easter series and Kathy of Up To Date Interiors and I are sharing Easter egg DIYs! I’ve had an idea for an Easter egg tag made of homemade clay, or salt dough if you will, for a while and it turned out to be quite the experience for such a simple project….. let me tell you why.
How to make homemade clay
Making your own salt dough homemade clay is pretty easy. By mixing flour, salt, and water you can create your own air drying clay in minutes. It’s great for all sorts of crafts and even safe for kids to use. I shared the recipe I used below.
Time needed: 3 minutes.
How to make homemade clay
- Mix 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of salt in a large bowl.
- Gradually add 1 and a 1/2 cups of warm water to the mix
Use a wooden spoon or your hand to mix it all up. - Knead the dough gently in the bowl or on a counter until it makes a smooth workable dough.
You don’t want the dough to dry or too sticky. If the dough is too sticky, add a tablespoon of flour until the mix is just right.
Once I had the clay mixed, I used a rolling pin to spread it out onto my countertop. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find my egg shaped cookie cutter! What to do ..what to do? I opted to try and hand shape some clay into an egg shape and that was a catastrophe. The clay puffed up and looked like hard biscuits!
How to mold clay into an egg shape without a cookie cutter
I rolled out more clay and tried again using a sake cup to cut out a circle then pinched the sides to mold it into a more oval-ish shape. I used my fingers to gently tap each piece down so that it would make an even better oval shape. I thought they turned out pretty good and into the oven they went.
How to dry homemade clay Easter egg tags
Once your clay is shaped and ready to dry, you have two options to make it harden. Air drying salt dough will take 3 to 4 days, sometimes a few more depending on the size of the project. You can speed up the process by baking the clay at 250F for a 2 to 3 hours.
After 10 minutes had passed, I realized that I hadn’t used my straw to poke a hole in each tag for the yarn! UGHHHH! Luckily the tags weren’t hard yet and I was able to add a hole to each one. Yep, it was that kind of day. After baking for 2 hours, the tags were painted with my DIY textured terracotta paint to give it that old world vibe.
I ADORE how each tag looks rustic and organic with this type of paint. I added the tags to some glass jars using ivory yarn to create a spring vignette on my kitchen shelves. You know how much I love glass jar vignettes. It’s one of my staple boho home decor must haves! I have a plan for the rest of the tags. Stay tuned for my spring tablescape coming next week!
