Grasscloth Wallpaper in Powder Room
This post has been sponsored by Spoonflower and I’m so thankful to be sharing this awesome wallpaper with you today!
What was once viewed as a decor element only found in your grandma’s house has been growing as the IN thing to have in your home over the last several years. I personally have always been a fan of wallpaper (especially the ones with a tropical flair!), but the popularity of wallpaper has also been helping in driving the cost of it down with quality remaining high.
Spoonflower has recently launched another wallpaper substrate that is sure to please, grasscloth wallpaper! Grasscloth wallpaper has been on my radar for decades, but sadly I hadn’t found the price-point that wouldn’t bring me face to face with a divorce lawyer. My hubs is all about great stylish living, but not for insane prices.
I’ve always loved grasscloth wallpaper and have dreamt of having it in my home. When I had the opportunity to do a quick update to a client’s powder room I jumped at the chance! I was so excited to see that Spoonflower not only carried grasscloth wallpaper in over a million designs, but that the price was great too!
I opted to install grasscloth wallpaper with the Art Deco Swan design by Kate Rhees in the client’s bathroom and am IN LOVE with it. Before I forget, you can shop this wallpaper (as well as other Spoonflower products like home decor and fabric) with my coupon code CASAWATKINS20 and receive 20% off. If you love this wallpaper design, you can get the matching tea towels too!
What is grasscloth wallpaper
Grasscloth wallpaper is made from hand-woven strands of natural fibers typically on an unpasted paper. It requires paste to install and can be a bit hard to handle if you’re a first time wallpaper installer. I had my share of difficulties when it came to the bumpout areas of the powder room, but I did manage to do a pretty great job if I do say so myself.
Because grasscloth wallpaper can be on the expensive side, a professional installer is often recommended so that the risk of costly mistakes is to a minimum. Grasscloth is definitely one of those papers that can cost you hundreds if you cut the paper too small for the wall, damage it in the process of installation, or any other scenario where you have to use more paper to fix an issue.
Installation of the wallpaper is slightly more demanding than traditional wallpaper and peel and stick. Since the grasscloth is a woven and heavier substrate, the paper takes a bit of work to maneuver around bumpouts or odd corners. But I’m happy to report that the installation is pretty straight forward when applying to a flat surface. You can follow my easy wallpaper installation tutorial to help with the install.
how to clean grasscloth wallpaper
Most wallpaper have a pretty low maintenance overall. The grasscloth wallpaper itself can be maintained by lightly brushing it with a soft duster. It’s important not to use cleaning agents to remove stains, but use the foam of a gentle household dishwashing liquid to rub softly with a soft white cloth. I found that heavy rubbing will smudge the design printed on the wallpaper. Keep this in mind if you’re installing the wallpaper yourself too! Be careful not to be extra with the sponge wipes after installation.
Where to install grasscloth wallpaper
Choosing where to install your grasscloth wallpaper is just as important as the design you choose. You’d want to use an area that doesn’t have too much heavy traffic. Grasscloth wallpaper is great for accent walls, the upper/top areas of board and batten walls, dining rooms, and powder rooms as well. You’d want to stay away from areas that get touched, bumped, or scraped often.

Now that all that information has been shared, let’s get to the after photos! The client has a small powder room in a historic Baltimore home. So…as you can see there is very little space!
Very little space!
