DIY Paint Stroke Tray Makeover
I’ve been really enjoying seeing the nice pieces in the Target dollar section. For the price you pay for each item, you can easily upgrade them to fit your own style. I found a plain black tray that was perfect to try out the paint stroke painting technique. I’ve seen a few paint stroke decor items recently and have really loved the effect. It’s such a simple makeover to do, so I amped up the look by adding a few different colors instead of a monotone color palette. You probably have a tray somewhere in your home in need of a makeover. Try the following tutorial to make your own DIY paint stroke tray!
What You Need
- White Paint
- 3 Acrylic paints (1 light, 1 Dark, 1 Color Pop)
- Flat brush
- Gloss paint sealer
Start by choosing your coordinating colors. I painted the black tray with a white chalk paint to start. This neutral background is a great starting point, but you could go with a lighter shade of any color like blue or pink.
Use a flat brush to make small brush strokes with your lightest color. Make your brush strokes in several lengths around the entire tray.
Repeat with another color selected for a pop effect. Then again with your darker color.
Let dry completely, then apply your gloss sealer. Apply 1-2 coats depending on the level of gloss desired.
I used the tray as a vanity tray, but you can use it on a coffee table or style it on an entryway table. Not only does it give my dresser a pop, but lets me keep it semi-organized….until my hubs comes in and messes it up!
Do you see yourself using this easy painting technique? I’ve seen it on coasters, plates, and even lamps! Next time you see a plain item in the store for a great price, try the brush stroke effect on it to add some style.
