DIY Gold Leaf Vase Makeover

Hola! Happy Tuesday. Today the kids and I are headed to the aquarium for some fun. This will be very interesting as I will be outnumbered by kids. One mommy and three kids doesn’t sound too fun, but the aquarium does. If you didn’t link up yesterday, I hope that you stay and link up your post to Merry Monday Link Party. I shared an image of my side table on instagram yesterday that included a few new additions to my family room. I will be in the process of completing a makeover in this room soon. In the meantime, there are small DIY projects that need to be completed and will be shared over the next couple of weeks. Up today is a DIY gold leaf vase makeover.

Do you have any recyclable things that build up in your home? I do, and it is my insane collection of vases. They are not the expensive type, it’s the cheap vases that come with flowers. Nothing fancy and easily broken. Why do I keep them, you ask. Because I love to “save” items that take up so much needed room in my house instead of recycling them. I can’t be the only one that hoards, I mean “saves.” Instead of tossing the vases, as the Hubs would prefer, it’s so much better to give them a makeover.

First up is this ever popular ridged vase. I have about three of these vases. Unfortunately, my first attempt at giving this vase a makeover did not look right to me. Though, my sister loved it and swiped it from my house. Your welcome, Sis! The vase has great details, but they are hidden by the clarity of the glass.

Enter my best friend, DecoColor Gold leaf pen. I didn’t have to do much to give the vase a much needed makeover. Just use the pen to highlight a few of the ridges.

You can do all of the ridges, if you prefer. The occasional highlighted ridges give the vase an abstract quality that I like.

If it gets a little tough to hold the vase and paint, try the vase sleeve! Much easier than rotating in your hand while avoiding the painted areas.

The paint doesn’t take too long to dry. Just a matter of minutes. By the time I had finished painting the last ridge, the rest of the vase was already dry. I didn’t seal the vase with anything, but if you prefer you can spray or apply a waterproof sealer if you plan to pop it in the dishwasher. I hand wash vases, so skipped this step this time around.

Paired with the right accessories and viola! A much prettier, art-like vase. It looks almost like a zebra pattern, don’t you think? Loving how it looks with my new Ginger Jar from HomeGoods.
