DIY Faux Fur Weathered Wood Chair Makeover

Give a thrifted chair a diy faux fur weathered wood chair makeover with this easy tutorial!

Another week has passed and I’m no closer to having my boho chic craft room complete.  I’m happy to report that just yesterday I received almost all my home decor items for the room, but the room is still jammed pack full of clutter.  The kids were sick last week and I had no time to clear out the room.  Sooooo, that’s still on my to do list.  I did manage to complete a diy faux fur weathered wood chair makeover on a thrift store chair I’ve had for months.  This entire project took 2 hours start to finish and I’m so happy with the results.

I spotted a beautiful faux fur chair in Pottery Barn and it cost well over $300!  I seriously considered getting it, but then remembered I had hoarded…saved two chairs in the basement with a similar shape.  🙂

Joann Fabrics just so happened to be having a sale on faux fur and I scored a yard of amazing grizzly length faux fur fabric.  Did you know that Joann Fabrics takes coupons from Michaels, AC Moore, and Retail Me Not?!  My total was only $18 for fabric that costs $30 some dollars per yard regularly.  Added to the cost of the chair $15 (It was actually a set of two for 29.99!), my total cost for this project was $33 since I already had the painting supplies.

Here is how the chair looked before…

Super excited with the turnout and I even love how it looks with the Edessa tribal fringe rug from RugsUSA.  Can’t wait to put these items in the room soon.  The chair makeover was quite easy really.  I started by giving the chair a good sanding with 120 grit sandpaper then used 200 grit sandpaper on some of the curves of the chair to make the chair look more worn.

I used a dry brush painting technique to apply a coat of barnwood finish paint by Plaid Folkart.  Dry brushing gives the wood a painted wash look perfect for rustic effects.  Simply wipe off as much paint as you can from your brush prior to applying the paint to the chair.  Continue this technique on the entire chair without wetting the brush with water.

Once the chair was dry, I measured out my faux fur fabric and used a staple gun to attach it to the chair.  What I love about this fabric is that the fur covers the staples.  So, there isn’t a big need to be super neat with your staples.  Easy peasy chair makeover right?!

It’s pretty close to my inspiration chair and I didn’t even have to spend more than $33.00.  The chair will look great next to the sleekness of the white desk and the global inspired rug.

  1. Ummm ok Knock-off Master over there!! This looks so beautiful and you made it look so easy! I love that you just happened to have a set of chairs with a similar shape to the PB ones…so great when that happens! And I guess you’re right…never thought about how you wouldn’t have to be so clean with your fabric cuts and stapling if you’re working with faux fur…the lines are blurred & hidden 🙂 Lovely job!!

  2. Wow that is a perfect makeover! You would never know it’s the same chair. I have the same rug!! The colors are a bit offbeat and beautiful. I had to get a rug to cover blue paint that I dropped on our beige living room carpet. BIG splotch of paint, impossible to clean it all up. The rug is cheaper than hardwood which is what I really want. 🙂

  3. This chair re-do is amazing and I wish I had your skills! Your tutorial is so good I ALMOST think I could do it! Thanks for sharing this fab inspiration with us!
