Colorful DIY Sea Glass Ornaments
It’s day 2 of A Very Global Christmas and it’s DIY ORNAMENT DAY! Yesterday, Kathy and I shared our Christmas trees and I had a blast! I just love when we kick off our series by sharing our Christmas trees. If you haven’t seen my Modern boho coastal Christmas tree, be sure to check it out! Today, I’m sharing just how I made those beautiful and colorful DIY sea glass ornaments that were on my tree.
My Christmas theme this year is a modern, mediterranean that is a blend of the sea and land. I’ll be using sea glass and other colorful coastal colors and merging it with the botanicals that I love. These DIY sea glass ornaments were so fun to make and the perfect demonstration of my modern boho coastal Christmas. Here is how you can make them for yourself!
DIY sea glass ornaments
For this project, I used just a few items that packed a colorful punch!
- Materials needed:
- Colorful sea glass (I ordered this one, but you can pick up at craft store for much cheaper)
- Acrylic flat ornaments
- glue gun
- ornament hangers
Before starting your sea glass ornaments, be sure to give the sea glass a quick rinse. I found that the glass was covered with dust from transport and got all over my hands and table. Giving the glass a quick wash made clean up so much easier. If you have real sea glass, the color shouldn’t come off. However, I have heard that some manufactured sea glass uses paints/stains that come off with water. Test how your glass will respond to the wash first one one shard of glass. If it holds up, then wash the rest. If not, just dust off each piece with a dry paper towel. Some of my glass did have some of the color come off (the purple ones, which was the ones I liked the most!).
While the glass was drying, I took the time to peel off the protective cover off of each acrylic ornament piece. One of the tips I just have to share is to plan out your sea glass positions before gluing. This makes gluing much faster and you have the ability to see just how the ornament will look when finished.
The color combinations of sea glass is customized to your liking, but I do love the mix of all the colors on each ornament. Once I planned out the position of each glass piece, I used my glue gun to adhere each piece to the acrylic ornament.
You can practically hang your ornament as soon as you finish since the glue dries so fast. I used ornament hangers to hang each ornament onto my tree. You could also use small pieces of wire to hang your ornament. See! Easy, Peasy! Now you have beautiful, modern sea glass ornaments in seconds!
Here is a bonus sea glass ornament that you can make too!
DIY Sea Glass Christmas tree Ornaments
To make your own set of DIY sea glass Christmas tree ornaments, take a few of the larger pieces of glass and lay them to create a Christmas tree shape. Again, plan out how each will lay before gluing together.
Once you have the color combo and shape completed, glue together using your glue gun. Once dry, flip your tree over and glue your ornament hanger to the back. This will make it easier to hang on your tree! You can also create these cute sea glass Christmas tree ornaments for a gift set or as a gift topper!
I can’t get over how fun and colorful these sea glass Christmas tree ornaments look. Yes, it is a bit abstract, but that’s what makes so even more beautiful. These cuties make the best Christmas touch to both smaller and larger trees. I placed a few on the mini Christmas trees in my modern bohemian home office and they are a keeper for sure!
Thank you so much for joining me again today for another Very Global Christmas idea. We will continue these modern Mediterranean Christmas ideas tomorrow! Be sure to head over to Kathy’s site, Up To Date Interiors, for her DIY ornament idea! Her DIY potpourri Pomegranate ornaments are so pretty!
