A Harry Potter Christmas Tree With Creative Uses of Harry Potter Items

Thanksgiving may not have passed just yet, but I’m in full Christmas mode! I kicked off holiday decorating season by creating a cute Harry Potter inspired Christmas Tree in my son’s room. You can duplicate the look with some easy DIYs and creative uses of Harry Potter items!
My son became a Harry Potter fan this year, reading through the first few books on top of seeing the first two movies. He also really enjoyed our summer trip to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. So, I thought it would be a perfect theme for this years room Christmas tree.
Harry Potter Amazon Finds
Much of the Harry Potter Christmas decor can run a bit pricey, so I wanted to use as many items creatively to make the Christmas tree really shine. I shopped for a few pieces on Amazon that I knew that I could alter in some way to work for the tree.
I bought a stationary set that included both howler letters and Hogwarts stationary. Both could be used as additions to the tree. I also purchased a “Happy Christmas” banner which I had planned to drape across the tree, but ended up only using the glasses portion as a tree topper. You can also find flying keys on Amazon and repurpose them into ornaments. There are so many that come in the kit, so I’m already thinking of new uses for the extra.
Decorating a Harry Potter inspired Christmas Tree
I shared a great tutorial video on how I decorated the Harry Potter tree on TikTok and Facebook. This video goes through each step I took to create the look should you want to break down the tree into steps. Nugget loved the tree and he was so excited to see the new pop up book versions of the series around the tree. Here is a list of the items used to create this Harry Potter inspired Christmas tree.
Materials for Harry Potter Christmas Tree
- Red Ribbon
- Snow textured ornaments
- Red flocked ornaments
- Shiny Gold ornaments
- Matte Champagne Gold ornaments
- White Glittered Reindeer ornaments (Patronus)
- Flying Key Ornaments (DIY coming soon)
- DIY Golden Snitch ornaments (DIY coming soon)
- Howler envelopes
- Hogwarts acceptance letters
- Owls
- Happy Christmas Banner (I only used the glasses portion for the topper, stay tuned for how I used the rest of the banner!!!)
Creating a Vignette Around the Tree
Though we love to show our Christmas trees, another great idea is to decorate the areas below the tree with theme specific vignettes. Around the Harry Potter Christmas tree, I added a few new pop up versions of the Harry Potter series, my own editions of the series…alas in paperback… , as well as some additional textbooks from the series. I found a cute Dobby ornament at Target and added it to the vignette along with the rest of the stationary set. This makes the Christmas tree more inviting… as if we needed an invitation am I right?!
Have you started doing kid trees in bedrooms yet? These trees don’t have to be completely over the top and can be as simple as a decorated slim pencil tree. Try adding some holiday cheer this year by creating a Harry Potter Christmas tree for your fan today!
