Global Decor Made Easy 1: Global Decor Tips For Home Accessorizing

I was up at 630am this morning and it was the most relaxing thing ever!  I walked around our quiet house, I was able to sit in chairs that I’m normally not able to sit in since the kiddos love to be on my lap, and I even sipped my coffee…slowly for once!  It then occurred to me just how much my home has progressed these last 5 years.  It was 5 years ago that I began my decorating adventures.  I was at home with a newborn and had the idea that I should be working on our plain house while I’m a stay at home mom.  Though I had an idea of what I’d like our home to feel like style wise; the time, money, and access to items I wanted was extremely limited.

My home has come a tremendous way from what it was and I’m thankful for that.  Just take a look at some of my before and after views.  I still have a way to go for me to feel like small updates are the only thing needed.  But, I realized that for someone who had no clue where to start or a budget to make it happen, this long journey to get to the place I am now has been enjoyable and rewarding.  As I finished my coffee, I thought that perhaps it would be great to share small decorating tidbits that help get you the global decor you want NOW.  Instead of waiting for the budget to do entire room makeovers or an extensive amount of time to tackle large projects, you can make small decorating changes to get you the global style look you want.  So, I’m happy to introduce Global Decor Made Easy!  Tune in Thursdays for weekly global decor tips and decorating ideas that make decorating easy.  I’ll be hosting this series on Youtube as well, so be sure to follow me there for the videos! I thought we’d start with global style accessories today since accessories make a room!  You can have the most modern or vintage of furniture pieces and make a room ooze global style by adding a few globally influenced home accessories.  They are like the jewelry of a room.  A few good pieces of jewelry can create one stylish outfit.  There is no need to break the bank either.  Here are 3 global decor tips to get the global look with affordable home accessories.

Decorate With A Global Style Basket

Baskets are not only a great way to keep things organized, but can be a stylish accent in your global style room.  Ikea recently had a globally inspired line of housewares and I scored this awesome teal basket there.  I can use it as a blanket basket, as a planter basket for tall plants, or to house magazines and books.  Instead of placing it in a closet or corner, try styling it next to the sofa or table.

Use Global Swag and Hanging Decor

Adding a little camel swag to a wreath or hanging art piece can add instant global style.  For less than $20, I can decorate with an authentic Indian handmade camel swag that makes my gallery wall pop!  This particular camel swag from Woman Shops World on Etsy has mirrors and small bells.  You can use other hanging pieces like an Indian elephant hanging decor to decorate cabinet and door knobs.  This elephant hanging is only $8.00 at World Market!  I’ve hung this little guy from a lamp shade and my Christmas tree.

Hang Printable Global Art

Just above my camel swag wreath (stay tuned for the tutorial!) in the dining room is one of a series of global printable art pieces.  I found a set of incredible global patterns on Etsy and simply framed them with inexpensive frames from Ikea.  I originally had all four of them on one wall, but over the years have used each of them in separate locations to spread the global art love.  There are plenty of sites where you can print the art right from your home printer.

  1. “… accessories…are like the jewelry of a room” – I love that! And it’s so accurate. Global pieces are exactly what I’m looking for, so I greatly appreciate this post.
