DIY Dollar Store Compote Bowl

I am excited to be joining Rachael of This Is Our Bliss ‘s DIY dollar store challenge!  Originally there were so many ideas and thoughts on what I could create for this challenge.  The reality was that the life of mommy took over and I have had less time this week to create.  We are in the midst of enrolling Nugget in Kindergarden and finding a preschool program that would meet Chi-Chi’s speech therapy requirements.  Not to mention that Pink is graduating highschool in less than 2 months and all her senior year events are life or death (according to a 17 year old).  I don’t think I spent so much time looking for my own Prom dress as I had looking for one with Pink.  With all the increased demands on mommy,  I’ve been looking for quick solutions and fast DIY decor that serves multiple purposes.  The DIY dollar store compote bowl I created not only is a beautiful piece to display your spring flowers, but I’ve also used it as a snack bowl for parties!

The entire project is so very simple honestly, that it doesn’t warrant an extensive step by step instructional.  I saw the glass bowl at the dollar store and loved the detailing on the bowl.  The addition of the candle stick, adhered with E600 glue, gives the bowl height and character.  If you want even more character and pizazz, try one of the following ideas:

  1. You could tie ribbon around the stand to add more color
  2. Spray paint the entire bowl a single pop of color with spray paint
  3. Give your bowl a mercury glass finish (see my tutorial here)
  4. Apply gold or silver leaf to the middle outer portion of your bowl and stand.
  5. For a rustic look, cover the compote bowl in chalk paint and distress with sandpaper

I’ll probably be revamping my compote bowl with one or more of the ideas above in the future.  In the meantime, I’m loving how well the DIY compote bowl worked with the simple spring floral arrangement I created.  See where I placed this arrangement tomorrow as part of my spring home tour!  Be sure to check out the other dollar store creations shared today by clicking the links below.

Happy Decorating!
