Why I Decided to Blog about Bilingual Homeschooling

You may have noticed that I haven’t been posting many blog posts about my Bilingual Tot School.  I feel like I have failed to demonstrate one of the two biggest reasons why I started to blog in the first place.  I want to take a moment to share why I decided to blog about bilingual homeschooling and my new plans to provide you with the resources/tools you need for your bilingual home.  Hint: It has to do with these two munchkins, lol.

I know many people who were raised by bilingual parents who only speak English.  They tell me that one of their biggest regrets is not learning their parent’s language.  One of my greatest assets or strengths has been my ability to speak both English and Spanish.  It was definitely an advantage when I was worked as a inner-city hospital nurse.

As a bilingual mommy, I wanted to be be sure that my children would also have benefit of bilingualism.  However, there wasn’t an extreme amount of resources for moms who want to homeschool or do Tot school in Spanish.  You would think I could just ask one of my many bilingual friends or family members.  Unfortunately for me, they are concentrating only on English.  Many of my Latin American friends and family members are not even going to teach their children Spanish.  I felt lost as to how to start and what/how to approach raising bilingual children.

My mother was a stay at home mom until we began school age.  Although she has a degree in education, I have no memory of her organizing activities or lesson plans to teach us Spanish.  It was just something we heard and integrated into our brains.  Our home started as a Spanish only home.  My sisters and I didn’t begin to speak English until we started attending school.  This is a completely different environment than what my children have.  My husband does not speak Spanish apart from the common greeting words. While I try to speak to my children in Spanish more than 50% of the time.  Many times I resort to Spanglish so that they understand what I am saying.

If you are a mom who has felt just as lost as I was, I will help you as much as I can.  I’ll be making a greater effort to share the activities I do with my tots on a weekly basis and identify great bilingual resources for your family.  I hope you stick around Casa Watkins and let’s work together to raise our bilingual children.
