Upcycled Thrift Store Purse Hanging Planter
It’s Thursday! The week is almost over. It’s a thrifty Thursday here at Casa Watkins. There are so many thrift store items sitting in my basement right now. I definitely need to start using them in some way before they head back to the thrift store. How terrible would that be to pay for an item only to return it for free!
The first item from my basement is this thrift store purse purchased for $2.00. I liked the crochet, raffia, and beadwork of the bag even though it was way to pricey for a used bag. I kept thinking something could be done with it.
I used the rope mesh from the outer portion of the purse for some faux fishnet filler for my jug cloche. You can see that post here.
What remained was the purse itself. Flash forward to this upcycled hanging planter.
The purse was already dyed in coffee prior to its disassemble. The process was quite simple.
A small cut was made so that the bottom of the purse can be opened. There were several pieces of raffia holding the bottom together, so I just pulled the small raffia bits to open up the bottom knots. After the purse was inverted, I cut the inner purse lining away.
The zipper was left in place and turned out to be a good way to stabilize planter pot inside. Gather the bottom and use a band to keep it together. I had to adjust the band a couple of times so that the planter pot would fit just right. Invert the bag again so that the band is inside the bag. Then simply hang your purse planter once you have it looking great.
The coffee stained color looks great against the greenery and the bead work was a great accent. I am the worst plant mommy so I opted for faux greenery. I have to keep in mind that plants seem to die very easily around here. The dining room is not completely open to the family room or kitchen, so I can easily forget to water any real plant in this room.
The dining room gallery wall is slowly coming together. I have a few more pieces to hang before I share the updated wall. Hopefully, I can get to hanging the remaining gallery wall pieces this coming weekend.
