Traditional Dominican Morir Soñado Drink
Hola!
Yay for Friday! Hope your week has been great. I have been so busy with the dining room makeover that a lot of my housework has gone to the wayside. I’m looking at a weekend full of cleaning and laundry….yippee. 🙁
Typically, my weekends are full of family activities and cleaning. As a child in a Dominican household, weekends also meant a tasty breakfast batida (or shake). One of best Dominican drinks my parents made was a morir soñado. This tasty traditional Dominican drink, which translated means to die dreaming, is made by mixing orange juice and milk.
Don’t ask me where the name came from, but once you try it you’d say…
Ooooh yes. Now, I see why it’s called that.
You and your family will enjoy starting the weekend with this refreshing drink. Whether you wake up early or late, a morir soñado is great. Add a bit of rum to transform this drink into a Sunday brunch favorite! This recipe makes a good 8-10 cups depending on how much ice you add. Take half the mix for the kids and spike the other half for the adults.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 cups orange juice (I prefer no pulp)
- 1 can of evaporated milk 12oz (but you can substitute for 2 cups of milk)
- 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp of vanilla
- 3 cups of ice
RECIPE
- Add your milk, sugar, vanilla and 2 cups of ice into a blender.
- Blend until ice is almost completely blended.
- Then, add your orange juice to the mix and blend again.
- Add the third cup of ice to make your drink more smoothie like.
The morir soñado will be a smooth, delicious, and refreshing drink for anytime of day. If you are limiting your sugar intake, you can substitute with an alternative sweetener of your choice. I’ve made this with Splenda before and it tastes just as great. Check the box of the sweetener for the correct substitution amount. You don’t want to put a 1/4 cup of Splenda in this drink!
Wishing you all a happy weekend!
