How To Make A Store Bought Cake Look Homemade

No time to make a cake from scratch?  Check out how to make a store bought cake look homemade and make it your own!

Are you in charge of bringing dessert for the holiday meals?  Or perhaps you get so caught up in making the meal itself that you have very little time left for baking a dessert.

I fall in the latter.

I’ve learned over the years that it’s just easier to create a semi-homemade dessert rather than something completely from scratch when I’m cooking an entire meal like Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.  Last year, I shared a semi homemade pound cake idea and it was a hit.  Sometimes you just need to fake a homemade cake to keep you sane during the holidays.  Here’s how to fake a homemade cake and make a store bought cake look homemade.  This store bought cake decorating idea with cookies is sure to be a smash!

How To Make A Store Bought Cake Look Homemade

I do have to note, that this cake was inspired by a delicious semi-homemade cake I ate at a baby shower last year.  Oh my goodness, was that such a tasty cake.  It married a vanilla buttercream frosted cake with Berger cookies.  You may not know what Berger cookies are if you live outside of Maryland.  Maryland, specifically Baltimore city, is known for a few great things: crabs, fudge, and Berger cookies.  Berger cookies are soft creamy shortbread like cookies that are topped with a chocolate fudge frosting.  Sounds delicious right?!

Guests enjoy a bit of Baltimore flavor mixed with a creamy vanilla cake.  You can either make your own cake or purchase one.  Again, we are trying to make a store bought cake look homemade to make it easier on ourselves.  So, I suggest you pick up a tasty round grocery store cake and some Berger cookies from the bakery aisle.  If you don’t have Berger cookies, any packaged cookies from the bakery will do.  Just be sure it blends well with the cake you chose.  You wouldn’t want ginger cookies with a lemon cake….or maybe you do?  I wonder how that would taste?

Store Bought Cake Decorating Idea

A homemade cake tends to be on the simple side regarding cake decorations.  So, very little decor actually makes your cake look more deliciously homemade.  The frosting must be soft enough to decorate.  Have the cake sit at room temperature for a good 30 minutes before you start decorating your store bought cake.

Crush a few Berger cookies in a bowl with a spoon or use a food processor.  You don’t want to pulverize the cookies, but leave them a bit chunky.  If your cookies are drowning in fudge, you may want to place them in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before you crush them.  This will harden the chocolate and make it less goopy when you crush the cookies.

Use a spoon to scoop up some cookie crumbs and place around the cake.  Use the back of the spoon to push the crumbs into the buttercream frosting.  No need to be symmetrical all around.  In fact, it would look more homemade if you skip the perfectionism.

Add a snip of greenery and a flower bud for simple cake decor.  Take it a step further and use a decorative plate for your cake platter instead of a cake stand.  Though, you could make it a diy cake stand by securing a bowl underneath your cake plate.  A decorative plate will help boost the cake’s presence since it is so simply decorated.
