Hola!

Oh my gosh friends!  I am super excited about this season’s My Home Style Blog Hop!  For my new amigas, the My Home Style series was started last year to bring you inspiring home styling from fabulous home decor bloggers and show you how you can recreate their home style.  For the longest, I couldn’t define my style within the generic decor terminology.  Was my style contemporary, modern, or traditional?  I began to simply describe by style as colorful, global eclectic style.  Sometimes we just don’t know what to google in terms of a design style, so I invited bloggers to describe their style in 3 words and show you their style.  I have definitely come a long way since my first My Home Style post and the Christmas Tree edition.  This time, I’ve invited my blogging friends to show just how their style has evolved in the My Home Style: Before and After edition.

Sometimes we forget that those magazine worthy homes were once empty or lifeless rooms.  This week, we will be showing you spaces in the BEFORE stages all the way up to their current AFTER state.  My home has definitely changed and I’m showing you just how much below.  Be sure to visit each site for all sorts of inspiring decor and don’t forget that each day is jam packed with decor goodness from even more bloggers!

The Living Room Before and After

My home started completely as a bachelor pad.  The hubs had purchased our home and oversized furniture before we were married and placed them in very odd angles in stark white rooms.  I started to tackle the living room during the One Room Challenge last year.  I was completely unprepared and struggled with so many design decisions that had to be made so quickly.  I ended with a room that was okay, but not entirely how I had envisioned.  I struggled at the time balancing what I owned (bleh..my hubs oversized furniture pieces) and incorporating my own style (colorful, global, eclectic style) into the space.  I definitely inserted color, but the global vibes were lacking.  I’ve really focused on the living room and family room recently since we spend a lot of time in these areas.  I’ll be sharing updated photos of my family room on Thursday!

Here is the room from the very beginning 2013.  I know!!! Hideous!!

Infusing Color Into A Room

One of the main components of my style are the colorful accents.  My living room went from plain Jane to a colorful Carmen with colorful textiles and art.  I definitely love pillows and interchange them frequently.  You can never have too many pillows…contrary to what my hubs believes.  Sometimes, I stack so many on the couch that you have to push inward as you sit.  I love that coziness!  It’s like receiving a hug from pillows.

I also interchange curtains…….yes, I treat them just like pillows.  I tend to switch out curtains seasonally and will be replacing these green ones soon.  The previous rug was definitely a beauty, but limited my ability to add various patterns in the room.  I tried to use a neutral gray rug, but it just wasn’t adding much pizazz.  So, I replaced it with this gorgeous cowhide rug just this past week!

My family room received several pops of color by replacing the rug, lighting, and art during my New Year, New Room refresh.  However, this family room continues to get pops of color!  This week, I shared how to use non-traditional fall colors like jewel tones for fall decor.  You can see that post here.  You can see that this room is lively even in the fall just by using colorful accents.

Here is the family room before.

Decorating With Plants

Plants and florals are great additions that add warmth to a space.  It has taken quite a while for me to find plants that are able to withstand my brown thumb.  I move them around the house to catch the best light throughout the day.  Well, when I remember to do so.

Adding Global, Eclectic Style

Incorporating globally inspired decor is my true passion.  I love to curate accents from my travels, imported goods, and even those found while thrifting.    The global accents are not from any particular region, which allows me to really mix and match several differents styles to create a modern bohemian look with global, eclectic style.  I broke down all those style elements recently in a Get The Global Look: 4 Weeks to Global Boho style.  Some of my main pieces include globally influenced textiles, global pottery (I especially love blue and white ginger jars!), and unique looking trinkets.

Creating colorful, global eclectic style is super fun.  My room has dramatically changed in mood and it’s really fun to continue to add items as I come across them.  It’s such a laid back style that you can create your space as you go.  As you can see, it takes some time to develop the look you want, but it’s pure joy when you do get there.  Here are a few pieces from my home to get you started in decorating your home with colorful, global eclectic style!  Be sure to head on over to Melissa’s Polished Habitat for her inspiring Modern, Industrial Glam home style!
