How To Update A Thrifty Vase

I strongly believe that certain items just need a minor tweak to make a bigger impact.  The It’s So Ugly It’s Cool series hosted by Domicile 37  is a great chance to makeover thrifted pieces and show you all ideas for your own thrift store updates.  Paint packs so much power in a transformation.  Today, I’m sharing how you can use paint to transform a thrifted vase!

These vases have a very interesting shape to them.  They look like hollowed out gourds that were painted black.  Instead of painting the vase and possibly detracting from the unique shape of the vase, I decided to try a new painting technique and dripped the paint onto the vase.

To make your vases, gather your paint, a plastic straw, and paper towels.  Clean each vase prior to painting.  I also recommend matching the finish of the vase to make the look cohesive.  These vases had a gloss like finish so I chose to work with Americana Decor Maxx gloss paint in yellow.  You can purchase this line of paint at your local craft store.

Use painting tape to seal the opening of the vase.  Then, use the plastic straw to stir your paint and pinch the top of the straw to form a slight suction, which keeps some paint inside of the straw.  Slowly release the paint at the top of the vase and work your way around the opening.  Do not pour too much since you want the drips to stop at various spots of the vase.  Too much paint will drip all the way to the bottom .

Use a toothpick to lightly drag the tips of the paint drips.  This will make the drip marks less pointed and smooth the ends.  You want to make sure to do this step while the paint is still wet.  The paint will fill in any gaps in the drip caused by the toothpick.  Let the paint fully dry and add your florals!
