Guest Blogger Sara and How To Update Roman Shades

Hola!
Hoping you all had a fabulous Christmas.  I’ve been loving the small break from blogging to catch up on family activities and home projects, but I have to admit that the dreaded laundry has yet to be touched.  I’ll be back on the 31st to share one last blog post before the NEW YEAR!  Today, the wonderful Sara from Twelve on Main is guest blogging and she has an amazing project to share.

Hey there! This is Sara from the blog Twelve On Main!  I am so excited to be guest posting for Stephanie on her blog!  I have been following her for a while and love everything she does!  Her eye for eclectic décor is pretty spot on!  So, as this is my first guest post, I thought I might give you a little introduction on myself.

I am Sara and I am the voice and power behind my blog Twelve On Main.  I am a mom of four and have a fantastic husband who is my partner in crime on most of my projects.  I live in a small town, like, really small town.   From living in a small town I have learned to do things myself and be resourceful.  My main design tastes are farmhouse, farmhouse chic, rustic, simple, and neutral.  I have found over the years that I truly relish in a home as I learn to simplify.

I am excited to share some of that love with you.  Today I am featuring a really fun and simple way to update plain roman shades.  Who am I kidding, custom roman shades, with custom fabric are pretty darn expensive.  In my travels, I have found that I really cannot stomach paying those prices at this time in my life.  Remember, 4 kids?  Plus a dog!

SO, this is what I started with. I had a plain, white roman shade that I had been using in my kitchen. I took it down and began the re-purposing. All I needed was a black sharpie marker and a yard stick. I decided I wanted to create a herringbone design on the fabric. I spread out the shade, keeping it as straight as I could. I began drawing the long vertical lines on the fabric. Now, I did not measure these to be exact. I wanted the shade to have a more organic look to it.

Once I had the vertical lines drawn, I started creating a herringbone design. These were all freehanded, but you could use a ruler for sure if you felt unsure about it. I continued drawing the lines rotating the direction they went.

I also made the lines have random widths. Yes I messed up in some spots, but you know what, it was my first time, and really, its okay!

Once I was done drawing the lines, I was done! This was a quick project that I was able to start and finish in a couple of hours.

I am 100 percent happy with the unique look and simple design that they add to my mudroom. So, if you’re like me and have some plain shades already or maybe you want to purchase some but don’t want to go custom, this is a great alternative. So there you have it!

I would love to have you come on over and checkout my blog.  Here are few pics of some of the projects I have posted recently.
