DIY Mexican Pottery Inspired Pitcher and Why You Should Be Painting Your Own Pottery
A DIY Mexican pottery inspired pitcher and why you should be painting your own pottery for global style decor!
This past Mother’s day, my sister and I took my mother to do pottery painting. We’ve done it in the past and have had a great time painting our pottery. In fact, we’ve done quite a few artistic adventures for Mother’s day ever since my mom decided to boycott Mother’s day gifts for memorable experiences. We went to a local pottery studio, with my kiddos tagging along, and selected a few pieces to paint.
I love a good crafty gift from my kids, but I must say that one of my favorite things about pottery painting is the ability to create a decor piece in exactly the way you want. I’m talking about color, design, style, etc. If you’re loving a certain global piece, but can’t get it for any reason, then you can simply paint one! Paint a vase, serving plate, pitcher, etc inspired by global cultures and styles for instant global touches in your home. There are many possibilities available to you, and definitely more affordable options, when you paint your own globally inspired pottery.
DIY Mexican Pottery Inspired Pitcher
This time around, I decided to paint a pitcher. I blended Mexican/Mayan inspired symbols complemented with the bold blue color found in traditional hand painted Mexican pottery. I could have attempted to paint the patterns seen in Mexican pottery, but this time around I opted for a more inspired look versus literal.
How amazing does that cobalt blue look?! I’ve always loved cobalt blue and was tickled to see that there was a cobalt blue paint with little specks that allowed the background color to peak through. Creating a modern style with a traditionally shaped pitcher can be a stretch, but possible by painting in a simple color blocked style. One of my biggest tips is to follow the recommended paint coats for the effect you are desiring. I painted about 4 coats of the oatmeal colored base, cobalt blue, and mustard yellow to allow each color to really pop after the pitcher was glazed.
Next time you are looking for a fun activity and new globally inspired decor, head to your local pottery painting studio and create it yourself! This modern Mexican/Mayan inspired pitcher was super fun to create. Not only does it make a great entertaining piece for serving drinks, but alternatively makes a pretty centerpiece. Could be a conversation starter during dinner time if I do say so myself.
