DIY Floating Shelves in Linen Closet

This post is sponsored by The Home Depot. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.

That’s a wrap! The linen closet DIY floating shelves was a project I never thought I’d do, but am so happy I did. I learned so much in constructing these shelves that will definitely help me the next time I build floating shelves. I partnered with The Home Depot to transform our messy hallway walk in closet into an organized linen closet with DIY floating shelves. If you missed any of my construction shenanigans, you can catch them all on my Instagram highlights.

The design for the linen closet was based on the idea of creating floating shelves to replace the wire shelving. Originally, I was going to go with something more neutral and built in style. However, the feel of the rest of the upstairs was headed more modern, casual so I opted for floating shelves with a bold wall color. Here is how the closet looked before.

After clearing out the space, I painted the entire closet in the Caribe color by Behr. Did you know you can order paint for pickup at The Home Depot? Simply use the The Home Depot website or The Home Depot mobile app to order your paint and other items and have it ready for pickup when you arrive. You could also use The Home Depot’s paint calculator to help determine just how much paint you will need. There is also curbside pickup! I ordered all the items I needed to stock and organize the linen closet on HomeDepot.com and picked it up curbside pickup at my local Home Depot store!

To construct the floating shelves, I created a frame using 2x3s and covered it with plyboard. The process seems simple, but the walls had a slight warp to them so that made cuts extra….ahem…interesting.

The steps I took to construct the DIY floating shelves are below. You can create them in any location, but I must say that our walk in linen closet has never looked better. I highly suggest you create these for your linen closet or walk in hallway closet this season.

DIY Floating Shelves in Walk In Closet

  1. Cut 2×3 the length needed for the wall and a second 2×3 into 4 pieces 11.75″ in length.

Each shelf requires a base attached to 4 of smaller pieces.floating shelf materials

  2. Use 3 1/8 wood screws to attach the smaller pieces onto the larger piece.

I used two GFK #10 screws to attach each arm to the base. Then, two more #10 screws to attach the entire frame to the wall studs.how to make diy floating shelves linen closet

  3. Attach the front of the shelf frame with screws making sure that the wood is level.

Use clamps to steady the wood while screwing the front of the frame.how to make diy floating shelves linen closet

  4. Cut two pieces of plywood (per shelf) to fit the depth and length of the shelf. If all pieces have been cut to the sizes above, your plywood sheets should be about 14.75 inches in depth to accommodate the 1/4 plywood shelf face. Cut a 3 inch piece the length of the shelf that will be placed to cover the front of the shelf.

  5. Add wood glue then nail all plywood pieces to the mounted shelf frame. Use clamps, if needed, to steady the plywood before using your nailer.

  6. Add caulk around the back and sides of the shelf and wood filler to cover any nail holes. Repeat all steps for additional shelves.

Once I had all the shelves up, it was a treat to finally put everything in the linen closet. I purchased several of the Home Decorators Turkish towel sets. Each set brings 6 bath towels, 4 hand towels, and 8 washcloths! It was the perfect opportunity to replace the towels we’ve had for a while. I purchased a towel set in white, khaki, and aqua.

The woven baskets are great to keep items at a quick reach for the kids such as the toilet paper and washcloths. The glass jars make storage of extra toiletries simple. I used a few to store guest supplies as well as bathroom necessities.

Speaking of simple, the chevron hampers on wheels makes laundry easy too! I just roll these vintage inspired hampers right under the bottom floating shelf when not in use.

This closet wouldn’t have been complete without a new light. I just adore how this new Mitzi brass semi flush light gives the closet a modern vintage look.
