DIY Faux Moss Picture Frame

Hola!

I’m currently in the process of my son’s bedroom makeover and I’m crafting up some projects for his Global Traveler themed room.  I shared my inspiration and plans for the room makeover which you can see here.  I’m teaming up with Better Homes and Garden’s Live Better line to makeover his room next week and today I’m sharing one of the projects from his room with you all.  A DIY faux moss picture frame!  You’ve probably seen moss picture frames, but there is just a slight unsettling feeling I have about using real moss in a kid’s room.  So, I decided to use faux moss and it’s not what you’d expect.

I recently had my world rocked when I was introduced to a new line of textured paint by Plaid called Painted Finishes.  I used the faux concrete and moss to create a DIY concrete and moss bust jewelry holder this week.  Using the two shades of moss paint, I created the multidimensional moss look of this picture frame.  I can definitely see this process used for other decor items, especially for the fall and spring.  I’ve been pinning away fall looks eager to find something else to make with this paint.  Are you on Pinterest?  You can check out my boards here.  Here is how you can recreate the DIY faux moss picture frame.

What You Need:

Start by cleaning off your frame.  These cheap IKEA frames did the trick for me.  Plus, they come in a set!  Place both moss colors of paint on a plate, allowing the paints to mix a little in the middle.  Use your brush to add the darker shade first, then use the mix of the two shade to add dimension.  Finally, add the lightest color in various places to add highlights.  You can add each shade after the previous dries, or work while the paint is still wet.  I chose the later since I’m super impatient when it comes to paint.

Let the entire frame dry before placing your photo.  This is one of my favorite photos of my son and husband.  There is something sophisticated about using black and white photos in this green mossy frame.  Hang your DIY faux moss picture frame or place on any surface to enjoy.  I’m loving how the new texture on the frame looks next to the globe.

If you loved this project, then pin it to your DIY project board to remember it!
