One of my favorite things about being an educator was creating the study guides and information packets for my students. I loved guiding them through the textbooks and encouraging them to learn the study topics at their own pace. Though I’m not teaching anymore, I still miss imparting tidbits and relaying fun information. That’s probably why I love blogging so much!

I was recently asked by a Casa Insider to share some decorating advice for those wanting to refresh their home in modern bohemian style. After thinking a few days about where to start and what to share, I finally decided to take the Ina Garden approach and take it back to the basics. I love me some Ina Garten and her Barefoot Contessa show was one of my favorite shows on Food Network. Her ability to break down the cuisines and recipes into approachable steps in superb.

So, I decided to restart a couple of posts that never came to life and bring the basics of modern bohemian style to you. Keep in mind, that these tips and guides are applicable to any style. However, you’ll be seeing these tips applied to my modern bohemian style with global fusion.

Most of the tips can be done the same day you read the post to give you instant style! So, stick with me ladies and gents! First up, styling kitchen countertops!

How To Decorate Kitchen Countertops

The kitchen is often the heart of every home. So, it makes sense to start here in your journey to create your new modern bohemian home. I find decorating much easier and fun after all the drab cleaning is done. Before beginning to tackle any decorating, be sure to clean up your space and countertop. You’ll thank me later after seeing your pretty styled countertops that you’re not going to want to move to clean.

For a modern bohemian kitchen, your concentration should be on style and function. Though we can all get a little crazy with the decor in the kitchen, just wait until you see my kitchen shelf post, the countertops should be kept as clear as possible. Now clear doesn’t mean empty! Just be intentional with your countertop decor.

Intentional decorating for your countertops can be items that serve double duty, decor plus storage. Taking a look at my countertops, you can see that I have styled two areas surrounding my stove. The countertops are styled with the decor pushed back enough to give me room to cook. They don’t look cluttered, just styled simply.

I used a cutting board to bring in an organic feeling to my all white tile backsplash plus a small branch of greenery in a colorful vase. Wooden trays and mortar/pestles are also good here if you don’t have many cutting boards. Bring out those global wooden pieces here. Be sure to keep your entire collection to 3 or 5 items. Odd numbered decor pieces always look better to our eyes.

Use other elements like a cake stand to add height to your vignette. Bonus points if it has a wooden base to tie in with the wooden trays. Looking at this vignette, your eye is immediately drawn to the orange vase and greenery, but the wooden elements give it a serene and natural feel.

On the other side of the stove, we have a collection of 3 tall items and 2 surface level items totalling 5. The pitcher serves double duty just like the cake stand on the other side. The wooden spoons tie in the wood elements from the other side as well. If you run out of tall vases here, use a global art piece to add height.

You can see that your path of vision starts at the tall jar, lowers to the pitcher of spoons, and ends at the art piece. This easy path of vision makes the vignette much more pleasant to the eye and look like a designer styled it.
