Colorful Bohemian Basement Makeover
Thank you to The Home Depot for sponsoring this basement makeover! All thoughts about the incredible items used for this makeover are 100% my own.
The basement is finally finished! This makeover was truly a labor of love. We went from a cluttered, dark, junk zone to a colorful and lively basement. The entire process was shared via my Instagram stories and I invite you to look at the fun behind the scene videos to see just how much work went into the basement makeover. Let’s start with a quick recap of what I was starting with.
Colorful Basement Paint
The basement was extremely junkie and the simple task of emptying out the basement to paint was an ordeal! What wasn’t complicated was figuring out just how much paint to purchase. I used the Home Depot paint calculator to enter my wall dimensions and calculate how much paint I would need to brighten up this basement. Picking out what color to use….. now, that is a different story.
I wanted to avoid using white or very dark colors on the wall. The basement is not tremendously huge, but using dark colors would definitely make the space feel much smaller. Though I used a shade of white in the basement office, I wanted the rest of the space to be much more lively. Saffron Strands by Behr was the perfect color to bring the basement to life and add a tropical flair.
Wallpaper In the Basement
Speaking of tropical flair, the wallpapered accent wall completely changed the look of the basement. I couldn’t be happier with this late design addition. I hadn’t planned on using wallpaper, but I couldn’t pass up this beautiful mural wallpaper when I saw it. The Home Depot has several wallpaper options from Peel and Stick to traditional wallpaper. I recently used a gorgeous tropical wallpaper I found on HomeDepot.com for my modern bohemian office! Using open bookshelves allowed me to have the storage I needed with the amazing view of the wallpaper behind.
Painting Laminate Countertop
Another update I completed in the basement was refreshing the wet bar counter. I used Rustoleum Tile and Counter paint to lighten the dark laminate countertop. I have experience using this counter paint kit in the kid’s blush bathroom, but have never tried it on laminate. It’s holding up pretty good so far!
A basement always requires amazing lighting! I updated the ceiling light fixtures with brass semi-flushed sputnik filled with Alexa enabled light bulbs. The lights are functional and stylish! Plus, it was easy to install using The Home Depot’s How to Guides for installing a semi-mount flush light on the mobile app! I can prepare the basement for family movie nights simply by telling Alexa to dim the basement lights and can even create a “movie time” prompt!
Decorating the Basement
To give the basement a theater vibe, I added plug in sconces on either side of the huge tv. We aren’t planning on replacing this tv just yet, so the sconces give the tv area a more modern feel. I also created two zones by using a large rug for the movie area and a circular rug for the dining/game table.
The new blue velvet sofas and orange velvet chairs are super comfy for movie watching as well as game nights. White tabletops were needed to balance all the colorful furniture. I love how large the tulip table is in our game area. We can enjoy meals, popcorn, or play board games with plenty of space.
The kids are super excited with this new space and so am I! This space is now functionable for lounging, entertaining, and most importantly family time. Have you refreshed your basement recently? Your basement makeover is incredible!!!!
I am a neutral girl, BUT I have to say that I absolutely love your colorful basement.
And, I think HD is underestimated for their decor. I just love those sofas.
Thanks so much for sharing all of this goodness!!!
