Botanical Christmas Tree
Now, to this year’s Christmas tree! Saying that this year took a lot of and from us would be an understatement. We have all had our share of stress during this COVID pandemic. I have felt very much like my favorite Shel Silverstein story, The Giving Tree. I’ve given so much of myself to my husband, children, family, patients, students, etc. that I’ve felt just like the stump at the end of the story. Christmas this year is a time of recharging and reconnecting with my family and myself. So, this year’s tree is a botanical Christmas tree inspired by The Giving Tree!
Overall, it is a simple tree with emphasis placed on the botanical additions of the tree and the pink ornaments that symbolize the red apples of The Giving Tree. I’m not a big fan of red, but pink I can do.
Botanical Christmas Decorations
I scored an assortment of faux plants at Joann fabrics that were all 50% off! You should have seen my cart! Before I get into the specifics of the plants, let’s play a find it game. How many different plants can you find on my tree? Let me know in the comments if you guessed right! Spoiler alert as I’ll be sharing the details after this picture, so be sure to write down or remember your guess.
The first plant is quite prominent on the tree. Can you guess it? It’s the ivy plant! This plant works so great as garland around the Christmas tree. I grabbed all that was at the store, but I would have loved to have it cascade all the way to the floor. There are some orchid plants sprinkled in the tree too, if you can find them! Plus some dark green philodendron and a fern bush!
Spider plants give the tree more dimension and adds to the variety of plant shapes. I thought about using the spider plant as the tree topper at first, but loved how it pops and almost cascades down the other side of the tree. Instead, I used the palm leaves as a topper and more accents down the tree.
That’s 6 plants so far….
What really makes the tree shine are what I’m pretty sure are hosta plants. Correct me if I’m wrong. Either way, the white borders around the leaves make all the other plants on the tree really pop. Plus, it looks amazing with the pink ornaments when the tree lights are on. Just take a look!
The Giving Tree Christmas
Around the bottom of the tree are baskets filled with a few global goodies inspired by the act of giving. Baskets are a great way to infuse global style and gather items to share and gift. African baskets collected in a hyacinth basket make a cute gift basket for the home decorating enthusiast. I added a few planter pots that are going to be made over into adorable Moroccan inspired ornaments and gift toppers. Stay tuned for that idea on later this week.
Mexican serape blankets in a tall basket remind us to be cozy and share those cuddles this winter season. I love how the purple serape blanket blends so well with the tree and the orchid flowers decorating the base of the tree.
Finally, the other baskets hold wrapping supplies to prepare gifts for giving. I’m so pleased with how this tree came together and I’m excited to see what other Christmas tree decorating idea are being shared by my friends this week!
