Guest Blogger Danielle and a DIY Dress Up Station

Hola!
One of the good things about going on a blog-cation is that I get to introduce to your some of my blogging friends as guest bloggers.  I’m continuing today with another great guest blogger, my friend Danielle from Creatively Homespun.

Let’s meet Danielle!

Hello everyone! My name is Danielle from Creatively Homespun!  I am a mommy of two beautiful blessings under 5, a wife to an amazing man, and my newest hat… a blogger!  Creatively Homespun is a lifestyle blog that focuses mainly on all things DIY, recipes, home decor, parenting chat, and even devotionals sometimes!  Stephanie is truly a fabulous blogger.  I love reading her blog, so when she asked me to create a guest post,  I was so excited AND HONORED! I’m sure we can all agree.. she is awesome!

I wanted to share with you one of my favorite projects: My DIY Dress Up Station!

Our daughter is full of imagination. She loves to create and trust me when I say, she is ALL girl! (I wonder where she got that?) For her 2nd birthday I wanted to create something that would last many years and would also encourage her to grow in her current creativeness.

I am obsessed with this project! It is one of those moments where I am definitely re-living my childhood through my children. HA! The best part is… this project is pretty easy and takes very little time! To get started we needed to find a piece of furniture to flip! I scored this old entertainment stand from a friend for FREE! Seriously, you can’t beat that.

Once we got the piece home, we all got ready to create something amazing! The kids helped, which turned out to be adorable and memorable. Any time they can be involved in a project with me, I try to let them help.

First, we sanded down the stand and wiped it down with a damp (not soaked) cloth, making sure we got all the dust off.  We chose to take out the inside cupboard for two reasons.
1. It will then allow for more hanging storage and
2. Even though it was “non-breakable” glass, I didn’t want to take the chance.
And when I say “non-breakable”, my husband literally hit it with a sledge-hammer and nothing happened!!

Now we are ready to paint! We used our paint gun and some old leftover paint from an old renovation. Overall… Pretty simple process: clean, easy, and quick!

What a transformation already!

We let the paint dry and cure.  Follow the recommendation that your paint specifies.  I had a few things in mind for what I wanted, but overall I just went to the store and picked out the embellishments as I went.  I found some mix matched hooks and hardware at a discount store.  I also found some adorable butterfly mirrors that just stick right on, and a popping colorful mirror!

I also got two pieces of fabric.  One was for the curtains (which hide the mess inside) and since this was originally an entertainment stand, there was still that huge hole in the back.  So the second fabric was for the back.  I just used a simple staple gun to fasten it in place.

To place on the embellishments, I started out with replacing the hardware.  These adorable butterfly knobs were from the local Home-goods store.  I think they were perfect for this project because they add a touch of fairy-tale.  After that I placed the mirror on the side, the curtain rod on the front, the shower curtain rod on the inside, and the butterflies on the sides.  Simple!

For the curtains, I sewed simple cafe style curtains.  I wanted enough that when they were closed it would hide the mess inside, but I didn’t want them to be so bulky that they took up too much space on the sides when opened.

Overall I think it was coming together so nicely!  I filled it with all the dress up items a little girl would need: shoes, jewelry, dresses, tutus, boas, etc…

Since then we have had many Tea Parties, Fashion Shows, and Princess Role Play.  Every time she plays with it I can tell she feels like a princess, and I know that we will have many more years of amazing memories to come!  I think even after she is “too old” for dress up we will be able to re-purpose it to something else as she grows.

I hope you are inspired from this project!! If you would like to check out some of my other favorite posts:
