Kate Spade Inspired Pencil Holder: Create and Share

Hola amigos!
I hope that you are having a great week.  Today is the first day of the monthly Create and Share blogger challenge!  I am so happy to be hosting this new series here at Casa Watkins.  Every month, I will challenge a group of bloggers to create a look using either the same item or decorating theme.
How to create a DIY Kate Spade pencil holder from a planter
This month, I invited 6 extremely creative bloggers to join me in creating a home accent piece using the same planter.  You will be blown away by the drastically different looks each of these women completed.

Here is the planter that was selected for the challenge.  It is rather small in size and made of ceramic.  We all ordered it from Amazon, which you can purchase for less than $10.00 with this link here.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it until this past weekend.  I was looking online for some wedding gifts and came across a very cute Kate Spade Vase.

It’s such a cute vase and not traditional looking at all.  I wasn’t able to order the vase for the wedding that weekend, but I scored inspiration for the planter.  It’s too small for any big floral bouquets, but it’s the perfect size for a pencil holder.  The owl drawing is very easy to achieve.  You start by drawing the eyes with a black Sharpie.  Once you have the eyes down, the rest is so easy.

After drawing the eyes, draw the curved lines coming down from the eyes and stop midway down the planter to draw the diamond shaped nose.  Afterward, draw the lines for the cheeks and wings.  The feathers are squiggly and curvy lines.  This was my favorite part since there wasn’t any way I could mess it up.

My new pencil holder looked a little drab.  The owl image was great, but it needed a pop of something.  Enter my gold leaf pen!  I used the same gold leaf pen from my DIY gold leaf vase project to add touches of gold to the rim and top inner 1/4 of the pencil holder.

The gold touches were exactly what the pencil holder needed.  You will need to cure the ceramic in the oven at 350F for 30 minutes.  Be sure to set the ceramic in the oven while preheating and do not take it out of the oven until the oven has cooled down to avoid any cracking.  I am not set on the location of my family room desk, so I didn’t screw the pencil case into the wall.  What I love about this repurposed planter pencil holder is that you can screw it to a plaque or wall using the pre-made hole.
