DIY Painted Gift Boxes

May is high time for gifting here at Casa Watkins.  We have 3 birthdays this month, Mother’s day, Teacher appreciation day, not to mention the gifts that come up spontaneously.  I stock up on plain white gift boxes for such an occasion and today I’m showing you how you can give those plain white gift boxes a new look!  My DIY painted gift boxes remove the need for gift wrapping and you can customize the colors for the gift recipient.

It’s been a long time since I’ve painted something.  Painting is such a stress reliever for me and I’ve forgotten how much I really do enjoy it.  Creating these painted gift boxes with the new colors by DecoArt was a great way to relax.  Plus, I really needed cute gift boxes for Teacher Appreciation gifts this week!

What You Need:

  • Gift boxes
  • DecoArt Paints ( Cotton Candy, Scarlet, Coral, Light lime, Laguna, Champagne Gold)
  • Brush

The entire process is quite simple.  You can purchase the gift boxes from any craft store or in bulk from Amazon.  I will say that purchasing greater quantities makes sense for those times you are searching for a last minute box.  The paint dries relatively fast and I created these cute painted boxes in less than 15 minutes.

Start by painting a base color on the lid of the boxes.  Use a light paint color such as the light lime or cotton candy and paint the entire top of the gift box lid.  Use the remaining colors to add paint strokes in curves and thick lines.  I painted 3-4 strokes of each color.  Then, use the tip of the paintbrush handle to dab dots using the champagne gold paint.  Wow was this paint gold!  The sheen was spectacular and the metallic effect was beautiful.  You may not be able to tell too much since I only dabbed the paint on, but I’m definitely going to use this paint for another project soon.

Let your gift box dry and enjoy.  Use these boxes for jewelry, gift cards, and so much more.  I think I will create a few more for Pink’s graduation gift.  Happy creating!
