DIY Simple Vase Makeover With Tape

The past week has been extremely busy, well the entire month of February.  With 4 birthdays, Valentine’s Day, and two weeks of sickness there wasn’t much room for projects that would take a long time.  I can’t wait for March to start!   March usually marks the beginning of spring here in Maryland…when it’s not snowmaggedon.  The trees start to bloom their flowers, the grass begins to turn green again, and the best part is that it isn’t pitch black at 4pm anymore!  That may be my favorite thing about spring.  I can’t stand the darkness.  I’m embracing the new hours of light and putting some spring touches around the house.  For me, it all starts with the flowers.  These grocery store flowers can look super chic in a DIY simple vase updated with tape.

I buy almost all my flowers from Wegman’s grocery store.  Their floral shop is well stocked with seasonal flowers and they sell many of the florals in separate bundles.  These red-orange lilies were bundled in 4 stems for only $8.00.  Not a bad price if I may say so myself.  When making simple arrangements, I typically like to have a standout vase.  I’ve created a DIY faux concrete vase that looked great with my fall arrangement.  This time, I gave my cylinder vase (sometimes called a hurricane vase) a quick and simple vase makeover with tape.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when completing a DIY simple vase makeover with tape.

1. Use an unexpected size of tape on your vase.  I’ve used small tape sizes to create more detailed looks, like my DIY Scandinavian inspired vase.  You can also use multiple strips of thinner tape to create a larger tape pattern.  This green painters tape was perfect for spring decorating!

2. Cut your tape pieces as close to the edge of the vase as possible while leaving a small amount of tape to wrap around the edge.  This is definitely important for your clear vases.  Cleaner edges create a cleaner look.

3. Stacking clear vases is also a neat way of showcasing flowers.  I used a rectangular vase within the cylinder vase to create my spring arrangement.  You could fill the space around the two vases with water, seasonal items, or slices of fruit if you are creating a table centerpiece.  For a different take on a DIY tape vase, try placing the tape on your inner vase instead.

I’m counting the days until we officially welcome spring.  In the meantime, I’m happy to start some small touches of spring around the house.  Happy decorating!

  1. Cute, inexpensive ideas! I also buy flowers from Trader Joe’s; their prices are as good if not better than Wal-Mart!
