I have a small secret…

I have a Monica secret closet!!!

coat closet clutter makeover

You remember that Friends episode when Chandler finally realizes there is a secret closet in the apartment and it’s full of Monica’s junk.  Well, that’s how my entryway closet looks.  I have been stashing things in there for a while, but it finally went overboard this past holiday season.  I continued to stuff my project supplies, the kid’s birthday party decorations..from October and November, plus all the fall decor not to mention the outerwear and shoes.  I was so embarrassed to have guests come over for Thanksgiving and again for New Years without a proper place to hang their coats.  Clearly it was time to organize the closet and this month’s Better Homes and Garden challenge theme of organization came at the best time.

It’s been pretty crazy trying to get in the swing of the new year.  I’ve barely had time to take down the Christmas decor and remove the clutter from the high traffic areas like the playroom and family room.  Yes, my Christmas tree is still up…..and yes there are still open present underneath.  I would totally keep my tree up all year long if I wouldn’t have people thinking I’m crazy.  Fifteen minutes has been the length of time I’ve had to do home tasks.  So I challenged myself to makeover the entryway closet in 15 minutes using the great selection of Better Homes and Garden organization home goods sold exclusively at Walmart.

By incorporating beautiful hyacinth baskets, new wooden hangers, and a couple repurposed items you can transform your closet into an organized thing of beauty in 15 minutes.

How To Organize Your Coat Closet In 15 Minutes

Start by clearing everything out of the closet…I mean EVERYTHING including the dust bunnies.  I took the opportunity clean the hardwood floors and dust the shelf while I was in there.  Organize your empty bins, baskets, and hangers in the closet first.  Using empty bins and baskets will allow you to check out the flow of the closet and make any changes before you have to lug heavy baskets.  I used Better Homes and Gardens Hyacinth Twist Rectangle Basket for storage and LOVE them. Super cool baskets and they come with chalkboard tags. Either use them for labeling or remove them based on your style.  Upgrade your hangers to these beautiful Better Homes and Gardens 3-Pack Wooden Suit Hangers.  My hangers were barely holding up my hubs heavy winter coats.  These hangers are definitely a better option.  Be sure to buy at least two hangers for each member of your family and then 5-10 extra for guests depending on your closet size.

I added a couple of hooks to the door and used Better Homes and Gardens “O” Metal Shower Curtain Hooks as scarf holders.  The shower curtain rings are also great for holding extra keys!  Use the remaining hooks for hats and bags.

Need a place for your gloves and mittens or do you keep misplacing them?  Try using a Better Homes and Gardens Marrone 12×20 Twine with Clips Collage Board!  It’s great for storing your gloves and for drying out the wet ones.  If you have wet gloves then you probably have wet boots.  I used a Better Homes and Gardens Fretwork Extra Large Dish Drying Mat, 18″ x 24 for wet boots.  I’m loving that I can just wash the mat when it gets dirty and that it matches the rug I already have in the entryway.
