DIY Moroccan Wood Art

I received product for this post.  All thoughts and favorable opinions are 100% my own!

Do you ever have a great home improvement or makeover idea that you are so passionate about but when you gather what you need for this project you start to question it all?  That was the long standing tv cabinet upgrade project.  I wanted to transform my ikea computer workstation into an entertainment cabinet but it wouldn’t come together.  I’ve been living with a doorless cabinet for a few months and all the materials for the project for a year!  This week, I finally tackled a project that makes me happy about the year long process and gives a new life to something that has been an eye sore for months.

A couple of months ago, I decided to take down the cabinet doors on a whim and update them with a Moroccan quatrefoil design from O’verlays.  The overlay was glued in place using a strong adhesive, then the entire door was painted green and never saw the light of day again until this week when I was planning out the foyer for the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge.  We have an empty wall craving some color and this DIY Moroccan wood art piece would amp up the color in the space.  Side note: Check out my progress from week 1 and week 2.

The DIY Moroccan wood art piece was already a planned project, but I couldn’t settle on a color concept.  I’m still on the fence about my color choices for this piece, I’m thinking I may go with a more blue base.  The beauty of this project is that you can customize it to fit your own color palette.  Here is how I transformed that door piece into a beautiful painted DIY Moroccan wood art piece.

What You Need

Unfortunately I had a mishap with a good 1000 photos that were erased from my camera including the photos of the door from the start.  I do have this photo where you can see what the doors looked like after my painting attempt.

After applying the moroccan quatrefoil o’verlay with Dap glue, I painted the cabinet door green as a base color.  The cabinet door needed a good 2 coats of paint (sanding in between each coat) and then was ready for the addition of details using accent paint colors.

The addition of light blue, yellow, and red paint brings each of the quatrefoils to life.  Start by painted the quatrefoil with a light blue, then add yellow to the center of each quatrefoil and around the door.  Repeat with the red paint to add depth to your art piece.  There is no need to be Van Gogh here.  This process is to add detailing and the painting doesn’t need to be perfect.  Add your brown antique paint over the door to simulate the wood color seen in Moroccan wood art.

Once the paint has dried, it’s time to add the painted touches seen on some Moroccan pieces as well as painted Indian furniture.  I used the light blue paint again to repaint the quatrefoil as well as to add some painted detailing throughout the art piece.  I adore how painted Indian furniture creates amazing patterns in their painted furniture pieces.  You don’t have to go overboard with the painted look, instead you can make a few painted details like I did.

Voila you have a DIY Moroccan wood art piece.  I’m still figuring out how to hang this semi-heavy piece of wood in the hallway.  For the moment, it makes one good looking leaning art piece.  Don’t forget to hop on over to my buddies’ sites for more project tutorials!

  1. That looks great, Stephanie! Such a great use for an old piece and I love the overlay product–easy and simple to install! Can’t wait to see everything next week!

  2. It turned out beautiful! I love the overlay. Sorry about your pics. I’ve lost thousands before too. 🙁 So excited to see the reveal this week!

  3. Oh wow, Stephanie! I’ve seen the overlays but love the creative way they were used here. And it looks fantastic in your foyer!

  4. Oh my goodness! It’s like moroccan gone modern. I love how it turned out. Any chance you’ve got any wood studs in just the right place? A heavy duty screw in a stud with a heavy duty D ring or two screwed into the back of the piece could solve your problem. That’s how we did the ridiculously heavy “aztec inspired” wood art piece we made years ago. Because it’s so heavy, we don’t have it hanging up anymore lol.

  5. Love your project! My style is very similar to yours; I love the global influence. Have pinned your project and am already gathering my materials. I just hope mine looks half as cool as yours!
