From Infant to Toddler: Transforming A Girl’s Room

Now that Chi-Chi is getting older, we have had to make a few changes to her room.  She will be turning four in 5 months and I’d love to have her “Big Girl” room all set up by then.  Believe it or not, her room is still structured as a nursery.  So, I’ll be transitioning her room from infant to older toddler over the next few weeks and I welcome you to follow along.  I’ll be sharing tips to styling a toddler room as well as best decorating practices for promoting self directed care for your child!  This month, I’m organizing and incorporating a few accent pieces to kick off the room refresh.  Here are a few helpful tips to start your room refresh.

Organize, Organize, Organize!

One of the most important components when decorating kid’s rooms has to be organization.  My kids love to throw anything and everything onto the floor.  When it comes to clean up time, it’s so much easier to tidy up the room when there are baskets available.  I do not keep many toys in their room, but I was happy to find great Better Homes and Gardens sorting baskets at Walmart.  They came in sets of two and even included a small chalkboard front for labeling.  I love the look of the plain chalkboard front, but these can easily be labeled with chalk.  There were other great baskets available, which you can check out here.

Upgrade Lighting!

Chi-Chi’s room set up allows us to incorporate a colorful teal Turned Accent lamp and beautiful white pleated lamp shade that is connected to the room’s on/off switch.  Now, she can easily switch the lamp on and off.  Her previous lamp base was glass and didn’t provide any color to this white dresser.  I am loving this teal color and it will go perfectly with what I have planned for her bedspread!

Create Interesting Walls

When the children were much younger, I used several mobiles and projectors to give them interesting things to look at.  The same concept should continue as they get older.  Last week I shared how I made a DIY canvas art piece from a digital image, which I used to build up the gallery wall.  I saw this adorable, Moroccan influenced picture frame at Walmart and knew that it would be perfect on Chi-Chi’s gallery wall as well.  There is a vast selection of Better Homes and Garden picture frames that are also available online!  If you run out of photos or prefer to add a little more art, try inserting the front of a birthday card!  It’s great for number recognition and they make great art pieces.

My eye immediately went to this Better Homes and Garden starburst mirror.  My son pointed out that the mirror looked like an “O” so clearly we had to place it as part of Chi-Chi’s wall name.  Unfortunately, this mirror is a clearanced item and may not be found at all Walmarts.  However, here is a similar wall mirror that are sure to WOW.

Use Textiles Full of Character

Children’s rooms should be full of character…and I don’t mean cartoon characters!  Textiles and fabrics with varying textures are good for sensory building.  The bright diamonds pillow was a great for adding texture and color in a cozy nook.

When starting your kids’ bedroom infant to toddler transformation, don’t forget to begin with these 4 decorating points.

• Use baskets to organize toys, supplies, and books.
• Upgrade to light fixtures that are kid friendly and easy to use.
• Use mirrors, art, and interesting wall items to form gallery walls.
• Finally, use textiles and colorful fabrics to add character to the room.
