How To Get The Global Look: Truth About Textiles

It’s the second week of How To Get The Global Look: 4 Weeks to a Global Style Home!  Last week, I shared some basics on how to get the global look with furniture pieces (read that post here).  This week, it’s all about textiles!  Whether you have an authentic or a textile inspired by global style, incorporating worldly fabrics is a sure way to get the global look.  Be sure to head over to A Designer At Home where Corinna is sharing her tips on Global Boho style and Katie Gavigan Interiors where Katie is covering great Global style as well.

Textiles and globally inspired fabrics can come from several sources.  Specialty importers, Etsy shops, and other online boutique stores are great sources to purchase global textiles.  Though, you can always purchase them yourself while traveling.  Almost all of these textiles are handmade and take superb craftsmanship to make.

Many fabrics are simulating global patterns and are available at fabric stores.  Perhaps you are not able to get authentic African wax prints, but you may be able to locate fabric inspired by African wax print or any other globally inspired pattern.  Check local and online fabric stores before you give up on obtaining global textiles.   You will be surprised at the selections of globally inspired textiles.

If you are still unable to obtain global textiles or globally inspired fabrics, try making it yourself!  Honestly, there is fun in creating the textiles yourself.  Even if you do have global textiles, I’d try creating textiles for fun.  Some textiles are very easy to create and look just as great as the authentic pieces.

Using Global Style Textiles 

Once you have located textiles you love, there are many ways you can incorporate into your home.  Check out these decorating ideas to maximize your global style textiles.

1. Incorporate an assortment of rugs by layering or arranging several smaller rugs into one look
2. Get those blankets out of the baskets and use them over seating
3. Arrange an assortment of pillows featuring coordinating global fabrics

4.  Reupholster chairs with globally inspired fabrics

5. Use a segment of the global textile to make pillow covers.  Try using a segment of the textile in the middle of a plain pillow or create a cover with the global textile in front and plain fabric for the pillow back.
