Styling Large Mantel Mirrors: Style My Global Eclectic Home

Aaaand we’re back!  I took a short break from blogging to help set up all the summer happenings around Casa Watkins.  Now that the kiddos are out of school, it’s going to be a wonderful challenge keeping the house tidy.  I’ve starting refreshing the house for the summer and shared my summer home tour last week.  I’ve pretty much kept it all the same, but now have incorporated a gorgeous vintage mirror I found while thrifting.

While setting up the mirror, I thought it would be a great idea to share a few tips to keep in mind while styling large mantel mirrors with eclectic style.  I’m also participating in the #OURSHELFIES decor challenge again on instagram.  I had a great time participating in this challenge last year and it was a good way to get the shelves and mantels ready for summer.  Head over to Instagram to play along!

Simple is Best……even for a Maximalist!

One of the most important tips when using large vintage mirrors on a mantel is to keep the mantel decor simple.  This is a super hard thing for me to do being a maximalist.  However, the star of the show is the mirror.  So keeping the rest of the decor to a minimum is best.  Try placing a potted plant mixed with petite bouquets of blooms.  You could also place a couple coordinating statues with colorful glasses.

Hello to Height

Working with large mirrors means that the rest of the decor must be to scale.  Create a sense of balance by using a mix of tall and short items.  Use stacked books, stands, or pots of various sizes to balance the mantel decor.  Using blooms or plants with various heights is just as great!

Leaning versus Mounted

Before you install your wall anchors and hang your mirror, check whether your mirror looks better leaning against the wall.  These mirrors tend to be super heavy.  Depending on the rest of your room, you could be surprised to find out that your mirror looks best leaning on the wall rather than mounted.

When it comes to decorating your mantel with large mantel mirrors, keep these tips in mind and you’ll create a lasting look!  Do you love using large mantel mirrors over your mantel or do you prefer large art?  Be sure to share your mirror themed shelf or mantel styling with me on Instagram using the hashtag #OURShelfies up to Thursday 9pm EST.

  1. Stephanie I love that term maximalist! These are great tips and your mantle looks great. I miss decorating a mantle since we hung out TV over our fireplace but it was a necessary sacrifice, so I’ll live vicariously through you 🙂 Hope your kiddos have a great summer now that school is done!
